Obese Woman Dragged From Home, Hauled Away After Death Posted: 6 months ago by dollyllama
Smith's boyfriend and the couple's 13-year-old son, along with several neighbors, watched as Smith's body, still on her mattress, was dragged across the courtyard of the apartment complex, strapped down on the wrecker and covered with a piece of carpet.

What an awful way to handle a person. She was a person, after all. How horrible for her loved ones.

ridiculous

Former Chief Deputy Coroner John Linehan said he was shocked and dismayed that appropriate steps weren't taken to remove the woman from her home.

He said that fire and medical personnel have equipment available for handling patients up to 1,000 pounds and that moving obese individuals is not all that rare of an occurrence.

"When they scoop up dead dogs off of the street they don't treat them that way," he said. "It's just not the way to treat a human being."

I understand that they didn't know what to do. She was very large.
But, she was a person, not some dead animal. If she had to go on a truck, so be it. They couldn't use a covered U-Haul truck or something?
They couldn't have covered her with her bedspread.

There were better ways. Very bad form.

what a sad, horrific and completely inhumane way to go about removing her body.

Your right, I diserve that, sorry.

I had briefly read the story and didn't empathise with any of those personally involved.

I went back and watched the video. It was heartbreaking to see her husband and 13yo son.

I'm pulling the "Class" card on this one and saying that it definitely wouldn't have been done had they been a more affluent family.

...which is definitely bulls**t.

Ugh, the idea of the tow truck wouldn't have been so bad if they had taken the time to properly cover her. A filthy carpet isn't fit to cover anything, especially not a human being who is being removed in the sight of her family and neighbors.

Kat, I doubt that anyone got a good enough look at the 'carpet' to tell if it was filthy or not. They're grieving and everyone has said it could have been handled differently. What exactly did she expect would happen though?

She was dangerously overweight, she was bedridden, she wasn't able to care for her son, nor was she able to provide for the family. I don't know the details of Why she was that overweight but assuming it was genetic and uncontrollable she needed to do the intelligent thing and plan for herself.

The kid and boyfriend should have never been there when they were removing her.

The coroner in charge should have had a plan for a dignified removal system (I'm sure he does now.) This is just one of those cases where the coroner did the best he could with extraordinary circumstances.

Has anyone ever lifted weights? 100 pounds? 200 pounds? 300 is getting into the 'strong man' area. This woman was 750. If the weight alone isn't enough to make it difficult the bulk would have been. The average human is 2-3 feet across? What do you suppose she was?

So they chose to take her out ON her bed. That meant the bed itself had to be moved with 750 pounds of weight on it. They came up with a plan and it should have never been carried out in front of the family, but given limited resources and "Leaving her there" wasn't an option... They were at least able to do it without cutting her into 'more manageable sizes'

She should have been hospitalized a long time ago. It would have spared everyone this incident.

How would they have gotten her to the hospital? Probably about the same way.

Besides, just being obese isn't a diagnosis, a sickness. The problems I'm sure were associated/related to her weight might have been treatable, but otherwise she'd have been occupying a bed for no medical reason.

I hardly think this qualifies as the coroner doing the best he could. If this is the best he could do he needs to go do his best on the fries at McDonalds.

This wasn't "Oh man, she's too big to remove using our standard methods. Think think think. How should we remove her?"

This was "Man, she's too big to remove using our standard methods. Lets just drag the matress out.... and uh... Let's cover her up with a carpet."

He couldn't have called in for advice on what to do? Called in for someone to bring out whatever they would normally use in situations like this? This is not the first morbidly obese person to ever die.

It might have taken longer to get done, but it would have been better than this.

Sorry, but this is just an incredibly ignorant comment. Of course we know how much 750 pounds is, we are not stupid.

Did you even read the article? Or my comment above? Perhaps you have a response for this quote?

Yes, you could you be admitted to a hospital for morbid obesity, will your insurance pay is another question...

By the way, level 3 morbid obesity (BMI greather than 40) is a qualifying diagnosis for medicare/SSI disability.
