Homeschooler Ordered To Attend School Posted: 3 months ago by Doggylives
A New Hampshire court ordered a home-schooled Christian girl to attend a public school this week after a judge criticized the "rigidity" of her mother's religious views and said the 10-year-old needed to consider other worldviews as she matures.

How obscene that they ordered the child to go to school just because some random judge didn't like the parents' religious views.

For the article to compare teaching a child that the Christian god is the only god with parents watching their child slowly die because they are mentally deficient and believe that prayer will cure cancer is really obscene.

If the kid was sent to a private christian school wouldn't the child still be taught the same thing religiously speaking?

Even in public schools you will have many teachers who have strong beliefs. Would this ruling justify the firing of any teacher who doesn't treat all religions as equally valid?

Why is religion singled out? What about other belief systems; other cultural attitudes? If a family believes that women and men are equal and another family believes that women belong at home "barefoot and pregnant" would the state force the child to be taught other beliefs?

As much as people with strong religious beliefs give me the heebie-jeebies, I have to agree with the mother and daughter on this one.

There's not just a religious issue here.

These things struck me from the article

“…the attorney said, adding the mother had earlier agreed to allow the court to decide the child’s educational future. "There have been three counselors for this child and all have recommended public school."
This wasn't one single anti-religious judge. This runs deeper than a Christian family raising their children with Christian beliefs.

Also the mother agreed to let the court decide.

The ruling also said Amanda told a counselor she was distressed by her father's refusal to accept her religious beliefs and that "his choice to spend eternity away from her proves that he does not love her as much as he says he does."
That is her mother using religion to turn that little girl against her father. That's emotional abuse.

I was home-schooled by strict JW parents and I can tell you know I wish a court had made them put me in mainstream school. A lot of my home-schooling involved bible teaching etc.

I'm afraid I agree with the numerous professionals who have actually spoken with and spent time with the child

It sounds like the mom was covering all her educational bases. The judge said she more than kept up with the public school system in her math, language, science, social studies, etc. and even took supplemental classes through the public school system for art, gym, foreign language, and extra curricular sports.

This doesn't sound like an insanely secluded and sheltered child who isn't allowed to hear differing viewpoints. It sounds like any other kid who attends public school and then does bible study with their parents at home.

My sister is baptist and she home-schools her son, my nephew... that kid is angry...

I am not saying that all home-schooled children from baptist families will turn out to be controlled sociopaths (which is what I see in my nephew)

I am saying that nothing bad can come with exposing home-schooled children to other points of view... when it comes to the issues that makes everyone different, i.e. religion.

I don't think you read the article very carefully. That wasn't the case at all. The father doesn't share the mother's religious views and wanted his daughter to be given more options in life than her mother's rigid influence. Shouldn't his wishes be considered?

Besides, that article is from the Washington Times, a far-right publication that is sympathetic to the mother's views.

I don't think children should be indoctrinated into ANY religion until their brains have had a chance to develop, and they have matured emotionally and intellectually to some degree.
