I don't see a problem with this. The people would have spent that same money on gifts, so why not just give them the money, so they can get what they want?
No doubles of gifts, no gift registry, no crappy gifts, no spending hours looking for something that is hard to find.
Just give the money and say "Congratulations on your wedding."
Easy as pie.
