Convicted Paedophile To Become Ordained Minister Posted: 3 months ago by Doggylives
City of Refuge church proclaims that everyone is welcome and that's probably what attracted Mark Hourigan.

Hourigan was charged back in 1998 with sodomizing, sexually abusing and intimidating an 11-year-old boy.

Scary as that guy is, anybody can become a minister these days.

Heck, I'm registered with the Universal Life Church as a minister, and I'm an atheist.

Isn't this illegal? Putting a sex-offender in a position where not only will he be working around children but he'll be in a position of authority has got to be illegal

Lol, so am I. The difference is that neither you or me will be preaching and ministering to a flock in a real church. And I'm presuming neither of us have raped any kids recently. I know we eat babies but...

You must have missed this...

Pastor Randy Meadows says the lord has touched Hourigan's heart.
The lord has touched him (presumably not in that way)

He's a changed man. Once the lords touched you, you won't be touching any kids.

Apart from the rapey priests of the Catholic church etc. They're not real Christians though

Fine. Perhaps the Lord has touched him. I'll accept that as long as the Lord testifies to that in court.

It's my understanding that it doesn't matter so much... so long as all his interactions with children are supervised by another adult and he doesn't start a strictly kid organization (like a daycare).

Wow. That is just wrong or at least it should be. Fine he'll be "supervised" allegedly. Of course the supervisor will probably be one of the church employees who in effect work for him so that really shouldn't count.

Plus what if being constantly around so many children places him in a constant temptation. He may or may not have to opportunity to do anything with those particular children but what about other children?

We need a ambitious prosecutor who will take up this case and prevent it.

Come on. You're over reacting. All he did was sodomize, sexually abuse and intimidate an 11-year-old boy. It's not like he...

...oh wait.

Convicted in 1998.

If I had my way he would be in prison for another nine more years.

I say 20 yrs. first offense, no early release., 25 second offense, and if somehow you can offend a 3rd time, death.

Wouldn't it be nice if rape were treated as a serious crime, with serious punishment?

Particularly since most rapists, unlike most murderers, are highly likely to act again?

I guess it's because I'm a guy, and I guess it's because I never have and I can't imagine that I ever would rape anyone, but every time I read someone say "lock up and throw away the key when someone rapes" there's a big part of me that goes "eeek".

A highschool friend of my wife spent two years in prison because his (ex)girlfriend cried rape. After two years she admitted she lied. She'd done it before with several other guys.

I know false positives may be the vast mminority, but I'm sure they're more common than people crying "someone's murdered me".

So we shouldn't lock people up for murder because sometimes we put the wrong person away? There might not be false claims by the deceased victims, but that doesn't mean those convicted of murder are always guilty, either.

I think perhaps we should just be better at locking up the right people.

You're right. We do need to be better at locking up the right people.

The way to do that is:

Require better proof than a mere accusation.
No longer assume that the accuser is telling the truth even when there is no evidence of rape.

Those who knowingly and malignantly make false claims should have to face severe penalties

Those with a history of multiple false crimes should be able to have such histories disclosed in trial by the defense - at least in cases where there is no evidence of actual rape.

Also when there is no evidence either disclose both party's identities or neither party. Keeping the accuser secret while disclosing the accused often times will convict the accuser at least in the minds of the public who are too quick to assume the accuser is being honest.

I know. It's a tough one. And obviously I'm not saying that A) Rape isn't a serious issue, and B) We shouldn't punish rapists. My comment was that something always irks when people grab burning pitchforks and talk about stringing up rapists.

As 2Man said, part of the problem is that it's often a "he said, she said" situation (even when there's evidence).

*edit* Just to make this clear - I'm sure that the VAST majority of rape charges are fully legitimate, and also that many people never come forward with legitimate cases for fear of the "he said, she said" problem, which is just about as f'd up as false accusations.

I don't know if there'll ever be a good solution for this one, short of a perfect lie detector. I *do* think there should be stronger repercussions against people who abuse the rape accusation. People who abuse it seriously damage more people than just the person they're falsely accusing.

When you're a guy, rape, just like paedophilia, is one of those nasty things to be accused of because people always seem presume guilty until proven otherwise.

Meh, forget prison-- A single bullet to the head costs less than a dollar, and you will never have to fear for the children again after that.

Harsh, but think about it-- prison doesn't solve anything. The only effect it has is turning people into savage animals, to prey upon each other in a closed-off world which encourages that kind of behavior.
