Charles Darwin film 'too controversial for religious America' Posted: 3 months ago by Doggylives
US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.

In general, Film and TV executives (and especially distribution companies) here have a notoriously-dim view of the intelligence of the American viewing public.

It's too bad. Too many great shows or movies hamstrung by this attitude.

Here is a link to the Gallup poll cited in the article.

Summation of the polls findings: The more educated you are, the more likely you are to believe in evolution. Conversely, you're less likely to believe in evolution if you attend regular church services.

To be truthful, this is a little bit misleading:
only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution
They could easily have said, "only 25% of people don't believe in evolution." The rest have no opinion, most likely because it's not something that people think about every day and probably don't care one way or the other. I think that watching a film like this might push some of that 36% over into the "believer" category.

"No opinion" on such a topic is creepy. It's like saying "no opinion" to whether you believe the sun is the center of our solar system.

I still find it odd and amusing that there are people in the modern, western world who wouldn't 'believe' in evolution. The whole concept of it is just bizarre.

That seems like really poor writing. I hope they ran that through their department of redundancy department, I hope.

The idea that the sun is the center of the solar system is proven fact. The theory of evolution is a work in progress. It is nowhere near the simple fact of the sun's position in the universe.

Is it creepy that people wouldn't have an opinion? These people are lawyers and ice cream truck drivers. They don't see an importance to the theory of evolution in their everyday lives. Maybe they think such ideas are best left to the scientists.

I believe in evolution and I am also a Christian. The importance of whether or not we are descended from monkeys pales in comparison to the importance that Jesus was a real person. Monkeys, fish, whatever. I will take what the scientists think as a current working theory as what works for today. They can worry about the theory.

We know that micro-evolution occurs for a fact. We can see it develop with our own eyes. It only makes sense that macro does too, for why would the process of microevolution not continue over much longer periods when we have nothing but evidence to suggest that it does and not much evidence to suggest that it doesn't?

And no, the heliocentric model of the solar system is not a proven fact. It's simply supported by great quantities of evidence (like evolution). And I see no reason why lawyers and ice cream salesmen have any more need of the heliocentric model of the solar system than they do the theory of evolution. Evolution seems more applicable to both it would seem, for the sun shines regardless of who's orbiting who.

Gravity, along with evolution, is a factual occurance that has been verified by evidence. The Theories of Gravity and Evolution are our understanding of these factual occurances through science.

Gravity isn't a theory, it's a law. Evolution, while a theory, has been pretty much proven and accepted as scientific fact.

Read what I just said. The phenomenon of gravity is not disputed. The explanations that we have arrived at through science to explain said phenomena are certainly a theory, thats what the word theory means in science.

Just like gravity, the phenomenon of evolution is verified by evidence, and as you said, a scientific fact. And just like gravity, our understanding of the phenomenon is a theory.

It seems like we're both arguing the same point. I'm just saying that gravity is commonly known as a law. My first post was just a joke anyway.

My point is that gravity is both a theory and a law, in the sense of laws of nature.

What has really always bugged me is the sense in religious fundamentalist rhetoric that if you don't believe every single thing they believe, you will go to hell.

I've never been shown a bible passage that says one has to take Genesis literally in order to avoid the brimstone place. In fact one of the main selling points of Christianity is that there is only one requirement for salvation:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16).

To say that one will perish in eternal torment for believing in evolution either directly contradicts that, or requires some outlandish convolution of what it means to believe in Jesus.

Side note: "The Brimstone Place" is a great name for a band.

Dear Pirates: Please get a copy of this movie and pass it around the country. People who want to see it, ought to, silly distributors be damned.

Boggles the mind that a movie about a famous historical person (controversial or not) can't be shown, but we can have a ton of torture-porn flicks and that's ok.

melgesevad : You're making a logical leap from micro to macro evolution. While I'm not disputing your beliefs (I do believe in evolution), I am disputing the logical fallacies which you use in order to make your beliefs grasped. This just proves my point. I think science should be left to the scientists and religion to the religious. Both parties tend to rely too much on logical fallacies to "prove" their points. Its like trying to prove or disprove God. It ain't gonna happen. You can however use the scientific method. The scientific method says, "evolution is a workable theory". Any debate tends to ignore hardcore science.

I've explained before that my whole opinion on this is that I look to science to come up with ideas of how we got here and religion to explain why. Just because evolution is important to you and others, doesn't mean a person should be viewed negatively for not holding it to high importance. Evolution has as much meaning and the sun as the center of the universe. Its important scientifically, but it does nothing to to explain why.

My point has always been that, like "separation of church and state" there should be "separation of religion and science". Scientists shouldn't down on those who believe in God (they should look down on scientists who believe in creationism as a science because those people aren't scientists anyway), and religious people shouldn't take the creation story in the Bible literally and shouldn't look down on those of us who believe in science.
