After the surgery, Dr. Ciesla told law enforcement agents the bullet he had removed and pocketed was in the patient’s liver and “we don’t go after bullets in the liver.”

Did he have a reason for doing that? Makes little sense to me.

I didn't know former 49ers QB, Steve Young went to medical school!

seems an extremely light sentence for such a crime

I'm guessing it was probably the first time he removed a bullet and wanted to keep it as a souvenir. If his intent was criminal, they probably would have said but I don't know..

souvenir? There is never a reason that a bullet would be a suitable "souvenir". He had to know that the bullet wasn't there naturally and would be vital to an investigation.

The fact that he is a rich doctor probably has a lot to do with the firm talking to he received.

I know, I can't imagine why he wouldn't know that. Again, tho, it's just a guess on my part.

The fact that he is a rich doctor probably has a lot to do with the firm talking to he received.
Or maybe he was an otherwise upstanding citizen and pleaded ignorance or sensibility lapse, or maybe because it would be a complicated and lengthy process to find a replacement for him. Or maybe he was one of the officer's brother-in-laws (you never know!)*.. I couldn't find any more information about it but will post if I do.

edit: *that was a bit tongue-in-cheek, btw

The reason that he said "we don't go after bullets in the liver" is because removing anything from the liver is a very risky situation and part of the time it is better to let sleeping dogs lie, plus, if that patient died it would open the hospital up to lawsuits. Chances are, if you get shot in the liver, you're dead. The fact that this guy survived is surprising. That's why his hospital had the policy of "no bullet recovery from the liver" - it's a liability issue.

He pocketed the bullet to save his own ass and the patient's. He ran afoul of the law because he withheld evidence.

Talk as much s**t about him as you want, this is the type of surgeon I want operating on me.

If he did take it out of his liver, specifically (the article said 'abdomen'), that seems a very plausible scenario to me..thanks for the post, arrows.

Or, he wanted a souvenir.

I think I'd be more comfortable with the resident, thanks.

Thanks so much for that, Maven!

He had to know he would ultimately be caught in the lie because the bullet wouldn't be visible on subsequent xrays..

At the risk of over-reaching..

The more I thought about it, the more I think it was both a show of bravado on the surgeon's part and something he felt would be good technical practice (on a patient he considered an appropriate guinea pig of sorts). The whole thing sounds like he's got a bit of a 'God' complex, and was more about him than his patient. Not someone I'd want operating on me, I'd have (dis)honesty issues with him.
