I actually just proposed to my now fiance only 5 days ago.
I took her out to nice restaurant for dinner and Gold Class movies for her birthday. after the second trailer a video that I had edited played on the big screen with a montage of footage and photo's of us from the last two years. of course ending in the words "Will You Marry Me"
She said yes :)

So given the recent theme of sexual equality (or lack thereof) that has been circulating on Plime these last few days, does anyone see it as an issue that all ten of these proposals were made by men?
Is proposing something that only a man can do (assuming that we're not talking about a same sex couple here)?
If so, why?

Thanks for posting this.

If so, why? There's no real reason it has to be from a man, but this is an older tradition and, personally, I think it's a case of picking your battles. If it makes the couple happy, good for them.
And I bet a major reason no woman-proposer is on the list is because even the basic act of her proposal is considered "surprising."
...I like the umbrella one. Cute. :)

Proposals and their natural extension marriage really should not be, despite what Pat Benatar would have you believe, a battlefield.

That's pretty much answering my question with the pretext of the question.
Why is it "surprising"?
(and I'm not looking for someone to say "because it's a rarity").

In other words, I don't think you'll see a lot of feminists arguing that women should be the proposers...there are more important things to deal with; like making it easier for men to take their spouse's name.
Why is it "surprising"?

Well, that's the answer anyway, even if you don't want it. It's "acting in defiance of conventional traditions," if you'd prefer.

If a couple is actually in love and on the same page, it doesn't matter who proposes. My husband asked me to marry him at 2 in the morning when he got home from work and woke me up as he came to bed. It doesn't matter how it's done/who does it. At least not to me. I don't think he would have cared if it had been me who asked him that night.

Why is it the conventional tradition?
Is it the conventional tradition?
In my own personal experience there has only been one proposal of marriage involving me and another person and that was made to me. And she was a woman. A limited sample set, I know, but from that I'd conclude that women do propose.
So is the answer really that women are less given to elaborate gestures?
(this is directed to all who have experience of or opinions on the matter)

(this is directed to all who have experience of or opinions on the matter) Once, I had been the one to propose to a guy. It took him so by surprise that I am not sure that he said yes because he felt the same way or if he wanted to brag to his buddies that a woman had proposed to him...
The relationship fell apart... I am not into mamma's boys anyways...
That was before I met my husband...

This only encouraged her to more enthusiasm (but no expansive gestures - although given her success rate I can understand that).
if he wanted to brag to his buddies that a woman had proposed to him...
I mention it only for illustrative purposes - of course you knew that.

Hurrah for happy endings - did he propose to you?
(actually just a straight out question, nothing to do with the male:female proposal ratio)

(actually just a straight out question, nothing to do with the male:female proposal ratio) He actually did propose after overtly expressing his (and my) mutual hatred for the Hallmark holiday that is Valentine's Day...
Caught me by surprise when he actually proposed ON Valentine's day...
That had been after 2-4 years on and off. Just seemed to fit...
None of my friends would put it past me to actually propose to a guy, if I felt it is right and after just casually talking about it for a while...
I do give my husband flowers once in a while... just because...

It doesn't matter how it's done/who does it. Totally agree with you here. I brought up getting married to my husband and by the time we were, it was just a natural progression of the relationship.
It's nice to switch things up once in a while ;) Plus my hubby is a *huge* procrastinator and drags his feet, so I prob. would have ended up planning the "surprise" proposal myself ahahah
