John Wayne died of stomach cancer on June 11, 1979. He requested his tombstone read "Feo, Fuerte y Formal," a Spanish epitaph meaning he was ugly, strong, and had dignity. May he rest in peace.

That plea is as topical today as it was then, and we have probably already seen advances in medical science that have come from donations to (and investments into) cancer research.
