I wonder what those hatemongers would have thought if people came to school with those "JESUS IS A C*NT" shirts seen in the Westboro Babtist Church sing-a-long video

If you want to be gay, I'm not going to stop you or wear a shirt that insults you, but is this a restriction of freedom of speech? Why is it applied to them but no one else?

Shouldn't we also restrict t-shirts with anti-smoking, anti-political, anti-religious, anti-etc. messages to be fair?

And what was that someone said about "thicker skin?"

If you do a google search with terms school ban clothing, you find that schools have banned many kinds of clothes in the recent past; ones that have "patriotic messages", flags, baggy clothes, gang colours, you name it. I bet a student with Goatse shirt would be sent home. I wonder what would happen to a student who came to school with a shirt that had slogan "I support school shootings", "Assasinate President Bush" or "Kill All Christians"?

I have a t-shirt I'm fond of. Has the old cartoon Ninja Turtles on it, all scratched up, and says "Represent". An older lady stopped me the other day to inform me that her son got suspended from a highschool for wearing the same shirt.

I completely support restricting free speech (which is what I believe this falls under) in high schools, and I'll tell you why: High schoolers are still children. Some of them still have no idea what it means to act appropriately, which in this case simply means being nice - and I don't mean "politically correct", which is a whole other issue. When you're a teenager who is different from everyone else, whether it's because of sexual orientation, religion, or skin color, the last thing you need is someone pushing it in your face that they don't like you and think you're a freak. "Normal" teenagers are insecure enough, and being labeled a freak makes high school seem even more hellish.

The elementary and high schools I attended had this rule. So why not?

Because that's just the way it works. It's not always fair, but that's life.

Let's take Christianity as an example here. Many people support it. Yet when people speak against it, those in support get a bit huffy (see several 'comments' and a whole discussion dedicated to people upset with anti-Christian sentiments). If I wore a 'Jesus was not real' or "Christians are wankers" shirt to a school, you can bet I'd be asked to remove it. This might leave me wondering - you can support it but not speak against it? But that's just the way it rolls.

Well i say the government is getting soft.
We made a constitution that specifically allows certian freedoms like peaceful protest. There was nothing rude or obscene about those shirts and I think they were a form of peaceful protest. Sure someone will get up set, its inevetable in protests for someone to get upset, but just because people get upset does not mean that a ban is needed. I say that the kids should be able to express their views in any pieceful way possible and I know Im backed by our founding fathers who wrote the Constitution.

The whole point of that freedom written out for us in the constitution is so that it give Americans freedom of peaceful protest. Specifically telling people its alright to stand up for what we believe even though some may disagree. Before Constitutional times that wasn't allowed to happen and now it seems as though were headed back to the 1700's.

All in all a poor choice was made

So what about peacefully expressing your support for school shooters?

What about a shirt that said "Jesus took it up his butt"? That's not even being anti-anything. And if butt is too bad word, perhaps rectum would be more appropriate.

well i think you should be able to protest anything. protesting school shooters wouldnt work any ways as there will be little support but it should still be allowed.

If you or I showed support for school shooters, it would be hard to get other people to agree with us.

and for the shirt, I dont have a good answer on that, theres a grey area in my mind. but im thinking that even though the words on the shirt arnt bad the message being said is very rude attacking(not protesting) not only religion but also gays and the shirt should not be alowed. On the other hand, other anti jesus shirts with nicer messages should be alowed.

Saying that Jesus was gay isn't rude attacking, it's a theory supported by some. What you suggest there is not only restricting free speech (for those who don't think the same way as you) but also restrict freedom of religion by granting some religious theories more freedom than others.
