When NY banned talking while driving, my girlfriend and I started texting while we drove, just out of spite. It is dangerous though. I try to avoid it whenever possible. Even talking is really dangerous. Supposedly talking while driving has similar statistics to drunk driving.

The ban should be broader than this, less prejudicial.
Banning texting by teens is discrimination.
The ban should be for everyone, and should include a number of similar distracting things. I have seen people reading a book while driving, putting on make-up, engaged in physical activity, that while fun, is dangerous at 55 mph, and more.

The other day there was someone texting while driving. I thought she might be looking at a GPS (which was in her hand, thus driving with the other unoccupied one) but my wife looked over and saw her doing it. I try to get as far away from these menaces as possible. Better they crash their own car than cause a multiple car accident and hurt others in the process. If that ever happened to me I would be suing for outrageous amounts of money!

I thought it was that you needed one of those bluetooth type ear pieces so you didnt need to dial. Is that the old rule? or am i just way off? I got that info from my dad so...it might not be the most reliable source

I can only say what has already been said. NOBODY SHOULD TEXT AND DRIVE REGARDLESS OF AGE! Gees! I first heard about this in a monologue of Ellen DeGeneres. I thought, "WHAT??? Is she serious? People actually do this???" It's crazy, don't do it. It will keep til you get to work, school, etc.

I think drivers yammering on their cellphones are equally as dangerous.
I always like to put it this way: how safe would you feel if you were on an airplane and your pilot was texting away as she/he was landing?
Now, compare the number of cellphone-related car crashes to plane crashes, and I think my point might be proven.

To me it's dubious how much people are really paying attention while distracted in conversation of any sort. Anything you're doing while driving, other than driving and focusing on the road is a hazard.
Putting on makeup (I so want to ram into these people), reading the paper, fiddling with the radio, having "quality" time with your kids, making out...you're a road hazard no matter how good at doing both you think you are. Those of us observing know better.

Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating texting while driving. It should be illegal and strictly enforced. I have done it, but rarely do anymore. And when I do, I do it with one hand while looking at the road. I would, however, much much much rather have people texting than driving drunk.
Edit: Just realized that sounded much harsher than it was supposed to. The pilot thing was a joke. I don't believe that they would ever text during landing.

I'd rather have neither.
You cannot text and look at the road, you might convince yourself that's what you're doing but it's simply not possible to push the keys correctly and focus on the road. That's a hazard. It only takes one fraction of a second to kill yourself or someone else on the road. That is why doing ANYTHING but focusing on driving is so bad. No matter how safe you think you are, there is the potential, at all times, for something unexpected to happen and unless your concentration is 100% on driving, you're a hazard.
