« teresag : I guess I should have put the [j]joke[/j] tag on that comment. Apologies. Virgo-ness kicked in. Too often I see folks draw what they think are "logical" conclusions based on a press release about a study, and it is a peeve of mine.
The oat-bran hoopla was from the release of a study about fiber in general. They used oat-bran fiber as an example of their data, and suddenly we all had to have more oat-bran in our diets.
On a funny note on that: Popeye eats spinach because of a reporting error. A "study" touted the benefits of growing children getting enough iron, and included a list of common foods and their iron content in the journal article. The publisher misplaced the decimal in the iron content of spinach. The common press picked up the story and focused on the "Spinach has a tremendous amount of iron, iron is required for kids to grow up strong, spinach must be required to grow up strong". Suddenly, spinach was THE food. This happened right around the time the first Popeye character was invented. Tada! Popeye eats spinach and gets strong. (Too bad they missed the bad effects of too much iron.)

You, see pregnant big-hipped women can throw back the long island ice teas without fearing the detrimental effects of fetal-alcohol syndrome. Those polyunsaturated hips would counteract any deleterious effect. It's a perfectly sound conclusion.
