The reason most of us wear poppys this time of year Posted: 1 year ago by spocksmyhomeboy
Some of the bloodiest fighting of World War One took place in the Flanders and Picardy regions of Belgium and Northern France. The poppy was the only thing which grew in the aftermath of the complete devastation.

REMBER THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM
I once had a very ignorant elementary school teacher tell me I really could not understand the importance of wearing poppies and remembering those who fought for *our* freedom, as my great-grandfathers who fought in the war had fought for "the bad guys".

This still bothers me, because they had lied about their age to go serve their country; just as anyone else. When they were still alive, they'd gather us kids round and tell us stories about the war: how terrible it was and how they had moved here so that we, their future, would hopefully never have to experience what they did. They told us never to forget what had happened, and to do our best to make sure it never happened again. That is why, they said, we wear our poppies, so we remember everyone who fought and to remember what happened so that hopefully it won't happen again.

While I can understand how it might be argued that colonial soldiers in the Continental Army, and their French, Spanish, and other allies, as well as those soldiers fighting for the Union nearly 100 years later "fought for my freedom"...

I have a hard time really including anyone else on that list...the Spanish-American War? hardly...WWI, not really about us....WWII, maybe...Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Iraq, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, all the mercs in central and southern Africa...not really, not really at all...

Perhaps the Abraham Lincoln Brigade that fought against fascism in Spain...much moreso than anyone since 1950...

Veterans' Day would be awesome if the dudes and dudettes in Iraqistan would hop in their personnel carriers and come home, or came back after that awful Hurricane that Pat Robertson "prayed off the coast"....

I hope the NatGuard is here, in the USA, the next time we really need them.

A lot of people lived and died for things we take for granted today. We owe them our respect, honor, and support.

Happy Remembrance Day.
