Interesting stuff - the common concenus was always that it was a resource issue, removing those less likely to survive from a brood before they consume further resources fruitlessly - natural eugenics.

Burring beetles practice infanticide depending on how large of a food source they have, and if they are over-taken by a stronger beetle, the stronger beetle will kill the brood and make the remaining beetle mate with it.
