I still want to know what made them become so evil in their treatment of the girl.

I can understand but do not agree with them creating a phony persona to spy on their daughter. That is bad, but it is understandable.

What doesn't make any sense is why did they then start treating her like crap and telling her the world would be better without her.

Either continue the ruse or just stop going online. Why become so hateful?

Drew went on to say the communication "sexual for a thirteen year old." Drew stated she continued the fake male profile despite this development.
that's disturbing. you'd think they could bring her up on some charges for having a sexual conversation with a minor or something. even if it was a fake profile it was still an adult talking sexually to a child wasn't it? i see them bust people on to catch a predator for just that all the time. on top of that SHE'S upset because the neighbors have turned hostile toward her and her family. i wonder what did she think was going to happen....they were maybe going to elect her to the PTA or something? if i was that family i would be shopping for a new house...out of state.

Actually they will get a new house, they'll get their f'd up neighbor's house in the lawsuit. Or I hope so.

Yes, I who hate most lawsuits think this is one that is deserved.

If they broke her heart by having the "boy" ignore her or politely stating he wasn't interested in her, than I would say they should not be sued.

No, it is the fact that they went out of their way to deliberately cause as much emotional pain and suffering as possible.

And banging on the family's door demanding to speak to them in order to exonerate yourself is JUST the thing to win back the favor of the neighborhood. Well done, idiots.

You do know that they haven't actually filed a civil suit yet, right?

yes of course, I was talking hypothetically.
Also they would not likely get or want the neighbor's house. That was a joke.

I was just trying to make a point that these people deserve to be sued as well as put in jail

Did they not mentiont that the profile was hacked/duped/whatever and that other people besides her family were talking to the girl with hateful remarks?
Or did I misread?

You know, I know someone whose parent's "friend's" would read and troll her livejournal account. She--being a typical teenager, wrote about being stressed with school and regular typical family arguements and one time they told her she should just kill herself if she hated her family so much. I'm so thankful to say that this girl knew better than that. What's pathetic though is that her mother and stepfather found out and took their "friend's" side.

She doesn't live with them anymore, thankfully.

According to Drew "somehow" other "myspace" users were able to access the fake male profile and Megan found out she had been duped.
This allegedly might explain why the hateful comments started. Someone else could have been given access, thought it would be funny to start flaming.

So many levels of wrong here...the mother did not feel guilty since Megan had attempted suicide before?
She wanted to inform them of what she knew to alleviate her "responsibility" or "guilt"?
W T F?
Her justice will come later, for sure.

Well if they knew the account had been "hacked" which the skeptic in me doubts is true, they could have pulled the profile since they could see the "hacker" was being cruel.

I was just going to comment on it. Because, you know, it's not nearly as heinous to pick on a teenager with depression and a history of suicide attempts as it would be to mess with one that was mentally sound.

If this happened in my neck of the woods, that family'd be run out of town with shotguns. And that's the first time I've been able to make that sort of statement with a measure of pride.

If all of these facts are correct, this is very sad.

The girl's parents should have been more attentive to their daughter's low self-esteam. I find it hard to believe that some mysterious online personoia saying mean things to her would have been enough to drive her to a suicide attempt; most likely it was a result of a number of other factors. Her parents obviously weren't doing their job if she chose to commit suicide rather than consult with them.

Lori Drew should be ashamed of herself. Her actions were not those of a mature adult. She definitely hasn't taught her daughter how to properly deal with similar situations. Her apparent lack of remorse isn't helping, either.

To be fair to the parents, one of the symptoms of depression is a withdrawl from social activity and human interaction. To many parents it seems like their kid is just going through typical moody adolescence. And of course, no matter how close you are with your parents, consulting them about your emotions and hardships is awkward and embarrassing for almost any teenager.

My mom had no idea anything was wrong with me until in the middle of a typical teenager/mom argument, I grabbed a hardback book off my floor and smashed myself in the face with it. It was only then, after about a year of sulking and crying and tearing out my hair, that she finally got me some help. And not all kids are quite so demonstrative with their emotional issues as I was.
