"Gay" didn't originally mean homosexual, either, it meant "happy". Language evolves over time. What if I felt that homosexuality was immoral and was offended that a word originally meaning "happy" had come to mean "attracted to those of the same sex"?
You do realize that "gay" is being used to mean very similar to the slang term "whack", do you not? This is far from the original meaning as well. And "retard" simply means one whose development has been stunted or halted, or "retarded". "Retard" indicates a sort of deficiency, usually mental, and often when people claim to be offended, the word is being used properly and people have decided they simply don't like the sound of it, and now we all must stop using it in order to ensure we are PC.

What about "bull"? Are we devaluing cattle? Or, "pussy"? It originally referred to housecats, then came to mean "vagina", and is also used derogatorily to implicate cowardice or weakness. Is this associating these traits with felines, or femaleness and femininity? Should cats and I be offended? Are you? Unless and until you are...well, then you can come to me and tell me, and I'll give you a hug and tell you it's okay, and that you can make it even better by going to a rally and waving signs, crossing your arms and narrowing your eyes, or attempting to have adult relations with yourself.
No personal offense intended, to any of you, of course, and I mean that. I love you all, I do. I'm not one to beat around the bush though; I simply find hypersensitivity to what is basically slang, with a very clear meaning, to be...shall we say... offensive.

*edit* By the way I'd never call someone who was mentally impaired or disabled a retard as I think it is derogatory which is why I only use it when referring to asshats like the retards in the article.
