Rowan Williams, the principal leader of the Church of England, has today said that he believes that in the interests of social cohesion, Muslims in Britain should be bound not by civil law, but by sharia law.

Rowan Williams, the most senior figure in the Church of England, said that giving Islamic law official status in the UK would help achieve social cohesion because some Muslims did not relate to the British legal system.
I may not be an archbishop or anything remotely approaching that, but in my honest opinion, allowing areas where sharia law applies, will do the opposite to achieving social cohesion.

I am astonished, but find myself agreeing with Gordon Brown on this topic...

Perhaps you would all be pissed off less if you read the BBC article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23050520/

Even reading the original article, biased as it is, one can glean that the Archbishop's actual position is a sort of "selectable" system where they choose overlapping rules or rules that wouldn't impact British life in the slightest.

Also I'm downvoting because nowhere in the article does it say:
Muslims in Britain should be bound not by civil law, but by sharia law.
Rather the Archbishop says:
It's not as if we're bringing in an alien and rival system; we already have in this country a number of situations in which the internal law of religious communities is recognised by the law of the land ... There is a place for finding what would be a constructive accommodation with some aspects of Muslim law as we already do with some kinds of aspects of other religious law.
Here he's referring to Jewish courts that both the US and UK allow.

This kind of uninformed crap belongs on reddit. Not plime.

Feel free to downvote me, but be willing to address me, and back up your "Muslims should be bound..." argument. I'll leave you with this so you can see what he's arguing is unavoidable which seems to be the media's favorite quote to pull out of context:

If what we want socially is a pattern of relations in which a plurality of diverse and overlapping affiliations work for a common good, and in which groups of serious and profound conviction are not systematically faced with the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty, it seems unavoidable.
You can still disagree with the principles of his actual statement, and you'll hear no complaint for me.

Edit: Looks like you removed the downvote.

Edit 2: I've also given this a second look over and removed anything that might be trolling, but am leaving the reference to the downvote so that readers have a context.

I hope to god this is a joke. That has to be the worst idea I've ever heard.

There's no need to be such an ass about corrections acerogue26, everyone here will happily take them without you making them without you being so biting and condescending.

Hi acerougue26, I also take YOUR point that the archbishop was quoted out of context.
Although I find myself in agreement with his full and original statements, I must say that in this age of soundbytes and media hype, one has to be so very careful in what you say publicly (or even semi-publicly) because of the danger of being quoted incompletely.
And so I was suprised that the archbishop got himself into that situation in the first place.
Anyway, let me add that I do not think muslims should be bound any more or any less than anybody else, by the law of the land. I have the sense that, unfortunately, in the western world we are not giving the religion enough respect, while at the same time we are cutting adherents to that religion too much legal and social slack.
