Sheridan College was put in lockdown and students sent into a frenzy today as gun-wielding officers and K-9 units searched for a shooter with a weapon described as a "long gun".

Better to investigate everything that's suspicious than write everything off as "probably" nothing. Running security is a delicate balance between extreme paranoia (where you inconvenience the people you are protecting constantly) and knowing when to relax and just hope nothing goes wrong.

No one in their right mind would carry a "long gun" through a school without the intention of using it. So we can assume it was (a) not a gun. Or (b) he was not in his right mind. Either way it will work out.

well, I used to pretend the tripod was a gun when I was a kid.
It was a cool gun.
But this isn't the police's fault at all. They got a call and they responded.
If anything, it was a professor's fault for not recognizing a tripod.
Even if it makes a really cool gun.
