A carrot that you can tie a clove hitch in is not fresh.

If you can take it out of its container and bounce it on the floor, it has gone bad.
GENERAL RULE OF THUMB
Most food cannot be kept longer than the average life span of a hamster. Keep a hamster in or nearby your refrigerator to gauge this.

That was GREAT!! I always hoped someone would come up with a guide for this.
I always do the smell test. Then I ask three other people for their opinion, then we all stand around looking at each other wondering why we actually took a second whiff to make SURE it was stinky.
Perhaps it was to see the gag face reaction one more time. That does have some humor value.

I throw everything on the floor, if the cats won't even eat it, it's no good.
If they do eat it I think "damn, that had a few more days left"

Expiration dates: why America throws out so much food!
We just switched out the old fridge for my newer one, and found a few items dated a few years ago....
When I cleaned out the cabinets when I first moved in with my now husband (2002), I found items that were purchased at Alphabeta... which went out of business in the 90's... Eeek...
