Scientology Given Direct Access To eBay Database Posted: 2 years ago by extc68
The Church of Scientology can delete auctions from eBay with no supervision under the VeRO program, and has used this to delete all resale of the e-meters Scientologists use. This is to stop members from buying used units from ex-members instead of buying from the official (and very expensive) source. Given Scientology's record of fraud and abuse, should eBay give them this level of trust? Will this set a precedent for other companies that want to stop the aftermarket resale of their products? - from /.

I'm not defending scientology, and have no clue what this meter is, but there are some products that can not be sold by a third party vendor if it's still available for sale from the original manufacturer. Pampered Chef is the same way--you're not supposed to sell current items via eBay.

Do they actively pursue it? No clue. Just saying.

But doesn't the seller get to appeal the decision?

If you legitimately own an item why should you not be allowed to resell it? Even with Pampered Chef stuff. What if I bought it at a party and decide I don't want it? Are you telling me that Pampered Chef has a EULA on all of its products?

If I was a former Scientology person I would look at those works like a bible and consider them outside of copyright. either Scientology is a religion or it is a corporation. They can not have it both ways.

It's the cornerstone of Scientology. During auditing sessions, members mentally go over scenes and episodes from their lives that have emotional charge. The idea is, through repetition, to reduce the emotional reaction to zero.

Probably why the Scientologists don't want these on ebay is that if people get to play with them they will realise that all they measure is conductivity of the skin i.e. how much your sweating.

Of course, another worry they might have is that the buyer might start doing auditing sessions themselves, undercutting the Scientologists, reducing their profits.
