The vast majority of the time the family does not have to pay for a rescue, although sometimes they do.
Also would they have searched as vigorously and as expensively if is was just some joe schmoe?
She can easily afford it. That is a mere pittance for her. Seems perfectly fair that she pay for the search instead of the taxpayers.
This was a bit of an unusual case.

Its not a matter if she can affort it or not... in fact it said she gave what 200k already to help fund the search? And if they wouldn't search as vigorously for "joe-schmoe" they should.
There is NOTHING fair about charging the widow for the search ... regardless if she has it or not...

Any time someone gets rescued (or not) after an expensive search you need only ask one question:
"How could this accident have been avoided?"
If it turns out the lost person did something stupid than their estate should be liable for the cost.

The Nevada taxpayers should pay for his mistakes? Why? It isn't like he is a taxpayer of the state of Nevada.
Here is an idea. Take the amount of money they spend looking for the guy, subtract what they would have spent looking for some average dude and bill the rest to the estate.
We will just have to agree to disagree. I don't feel that the taxpayers of Nevada should pay almost $700k.
The man took the the risk, he should have to pay.

I don't think that states should be accountable for the costs of personal mistakes. Make an effort, yes, but when it becomes evident that someone failed to take proper precautions to prevent their own tragedy, it is NOT the responsibility of the state or it's taxpayers to absorb that cost.

This whole thing reminds me of Jennifer Government, a book by Max Barry. Want the police to investigate the killing of your child? "No problem, how will you pay for it?"
