I don't care for this a bit. Sure, it sounds good to tax the bejebuss out of "luxury" vehicles - sure.

But if you do it by weight, then you also are including the trucks such as those used in construction and small business - which then the contractors have to build that into the cost of doing business, which in turn is passed onto the consumer.

Just change the taxes to whether the vehicle is registered as a business vehicle (for more than just transporting people to and from work) or a personal vehicle. Pickup trucks in most states for personal use already have "non-com" license plates.

For most businesses, it would be hard to justify a high end bmw or lexus SUV as anything more than a private car for an executive.
