A cheerleader? That is definitely not funny.
Interesting article. Not sure I agree 100% but I am not a Stanford professor so what the hell do I know?
EDIT: I see that the theme pic was changed. Interesting.

I thought the article was quite funny. Hitchens is an excellent writer and has a wit that I enjoy. Who cares if he's *right,* though I think he certainly was on a lot of points, the article was funny. And I totally agree that women aren't nearly as funny as men, though he's right about some female comics, who had me ROFLing in a major way.

Wow...
I'm surrounded by men all day at work (there's about a 5:1 ratio of men to women here) and I have to tell you... most men I work with aren't that funny, though they try and try. And concerning my friends, I'm happy to say it's about 50/50.
Women's conversations span way beyond shoes and motherhood. And yes, we make fun of our bodily functions as well (just not around guys) so this article, though it makes a few points, is still far from the truth.
Want proof? Take a look at our fellow Plimates; a lot of funny ladies here. Girls are funny, just get them in the right mood and you'll see.

Honestly, the Stanford study only studied 20 people.... I don't think that's really solid footing for this article.

This was a very well written article and I think because of it now I understand this anomaly a little better. It brought up some good points like the fact that humor has a way of making fun of authority and the whole being able to bear children makes women appear more authoritative therefore less humorous than a man. I also believe there are other options the writer could have explored a little further such as that funny people, imo, must be very confident. And when you're confident you're more likely unafraid to look stupid. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the majority of women are at least a little self conscious. I mean, come on, I think its safe to make a broad generalization that women try hard to look nice. (more so than the average man) (im not sexist its just more common for a woman to try harder in the appearance department) So if the majority of women are self conscious they're less inclined to be funny. Like the article said, they don't need to be they have their looks. I can understand why the writer mentioned that female comedians tend to be, hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three.
You can't be afraid to look ridiculous. If you don't have the looks on your side you're going to cling to other means of being worthwile.

One day they were talking about one having elephantitus of the nuts and the other about having a staph infection and subsequent packing of his "taint".
Yesterdays convo was about farts and if you ever accidentally pooped your pants. (one guy in gym class made an awesome layup in basketball and at the same moment soiled himself!) I am giggling as I write this.
Although I laugh myself to tears when they tell these stories (and don't have any to share myself) their humor is much different than mine.
I hold a black belt in Sar-quon-do.
