This sign was popularized by (Ronnie James) Dio, former singer of Black Sabbath and he took it from something his grandmother did, an Italian - possibly very catholic - old lady, who used it as a protection symbol from evil eye and also a blessing for all her loved ones. (remember that thing about ACDC standing for Anti-Christ Devil Child, when it was really Alternate Current / Direct Current, taken from the band's founding members' sister's sowing machine? Same thing.)
Because metal heads began using it as a greeting and support sign in concerts and among themselves, it became associated with rebellion and, consequently, Satanism and devil worshiping in the early 80's.

The reason he chose 'Satanism' was because he took Satan to represent natural human urges, and he viewed the Christian churches be based on guilt and the supression of natrual human urges. Some of these are deliberate hand gestures that are out of place (and not related to texas football :P)
Some are just loose hand gestures captured at the right time for unintended effect.
