In Flanders Fields Posted: 1 year ago by gratheo
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

I remember that poem from my faraway school days.

Very touching, even though I didn't comprehend the horrors of such war when I was at school, of course.

My kids have all participated in excursions to the remnants of trenches at Ypres, where there is a grotty, mouldy and dusty little museum set between the trees and the mounds and ditches that formed part of those trenches. Surrounded by peaceful fields today, the little museum is full of relics like weaponry, uniforms, various utensils, etc., used by both sides in the war. There are also some stereoscopes with old photographs that really bring home the horror.

My kids participated when they were students of the International Secondary School of Eindhoven, which is attended by kids (friends) of many nationalities, including English, German, French, Japanese, Dutch, South African, Australian, etc. Visiting such a site should be obligatory for ALL children, of ALL nations, so that they can all equally realise the futility of warfare in the long run.

I watched the ceremonies on BBC News early this morning. They had 3 survivors of WWI there. Amazing, to survive that war, and then to live another 90 years!!!

One of them never even spoke of his war experiences until he turned 100.

I salute them, and honor the memory of all those who served and fell. They did not fail.
