US strike on al-Qaida kills children

BAGHDAD - A U.S. helicopter strike north of Baghdad killed eight people in a vehicle, including at least two children, Iraqi officials said Thursday, insisting all the dead were civilians. The U.S. military said six were al-Qaida militants but acknowledged children were killed.
It said five suspected "terrorists" were killed along with two children in the vehicle. A sixth militant was killed in a field next to the road, according to a statement.
The headline could have been US strike on al-Qaida kills six militants and two children but instead the writer chose to focus on the negative and makes it appear that the strike ONLY killed kids. Because the headline is the first thing you see (and you may not bother to read the article) it also colors your impression of the article before you even read it.

Concur. Of course, the same applies to the body of the story just as often as it does to the title. That's why it's best to read everything with a grain of salt; you never know what's being overstated and what's being left out.

Sure, but what's the key point here? The dead kids. Why? We'd like to assume the US military is always killing militants...

And others would also like us to feel like we are careless butchers.

We're not. You can't have devices that create a tight, violent wave of pressure which will crush the internal organs and bones of your intended target without having some spillover of said shockwave. Others will be affected. Militants do not separate their lives like we'd like them to.

It's not nice. It's not supposed to be, but there has been a concerted effort to play the media by both sides. They will shoot from mosques, hospitals and schools, and call us butchers when we fire back.

I would argue that point with my idea that the media is truly conservative, but I'm tired. It's too bad really, I had some great points.

Newspapers write sensationalistic headlines to grab attention? Really? WTF?!

I'm off to start a thread about how outrageous it is that politicians lie!

Keep in mind that a lot of the time reporters don't choose their own headlines, the copy desk does. And their job is to hook.

I hated it, when I was reporting for a local paper. I always tried to be as balanced as possible with my articles, and some of the headlines the copy desk threw on them really embarrassed me.
