Freedom of the Press 2007 points to improvements in several countries such as Italy, Nepal, Colombia, and Haiti; however, it shows mixed trends in Africa, as well as a continuation of a longer-term pattern of decline in press freedom in Asia, Latin America, and the former Soviet Union.

Interesting, that! Especially the Map of Press Freedom 2007. Cool to see that Ghana, where I live/work now, has almost as much press freedom as Greece, and a bit more than South Africa..., but in any case considerably more than her neighbours in West Africa.

The Nordic countries top the list, but the press release points out:
However, increasing threats from far-right and Islamist groups during the year resulted in modest declines for a number of top-performing countries, particularly those in Scandinavia and northern Europe.
