Nevada town to fine for foreign flags Posted: 2 years ago by sholom22
The Nevada town of Pahrump is taking a stand not just against illegal immigrants but flags they may bring with them. The elected town board in the remote Mojave Desert community voted 3-2 on Tuesday to enact an ordinance making it illegal to fly a foreign nation's flag by itself.

Most countries have laws like that. I don't know how well that fits in US with the free speech stuff and all that, but luckily that's not my battle to fight.
Free speech issues aside, I don't think it's an unreasonable ordinance. People who invaded the country illegally shouldn't have the same rights as those who are there legally anyway. If they have no respect for the nation they reside in I don't see why they would stay.

But they are not just targeting illegal immigrants flying flags (although the article points out most of their efforts are against illegal immigrants)
If I want to fly an Irish flag on St. Patrick's Day, or a Norwegian flag on May 17 (Norwegian Constitution Day) I have the right to do that, whether or not I fly an American flag (which we do 24/7).
Pahrump to Pahrump.

In a country that accepted you as a citizen, you should be thankful and respectful enough to fly its flag above any other. And I guess most do.
I'm guessing the flag problem in Pahrump is largely, if not solely, Mexican.

I agree with it as well... If they said no foreign flags AT ALL I'd say that's wrong, but the key words are ...they can't "fly a foreign nation's flag by itself."
Bottom line..this is the U.S...on U.S. soil (which doesn't include embassies) the U.S. flag should be your symbol.
I would however agree that on "special days"..such as accepted national holidays (of ANY nation, not just ours)..it would be OK to fly an appropriate flag as a symbol of that country's celebration for that day. Hell..I'd even say flying the flag of whoever won the world cup that year would be OK for a day. :)
But to let some immigrant..legal or not..fly a flag of their country and their country ONLY is an insult to the country they have willingly come to.

I'm not an American but I am kind of surprised that everyone thinks this is no big deal. What happened to the land of the free? If your so free shouldn't you be able to put up any flag you want?
Why does flying another nations flag necessarily have to be interpreted as a dis to America? Is the American ego that fragile that they actually have to make a law to make this illegal?
Also to respond to Fizzz71 comment, your entire country was built on immigration. This law doesn't just effect immigrants, it applies to everyone. It is your interpretation that makes it an insult not the actual act of putting up the flag.
You have every right to not like it, and take it as an insult but if you are REALLY a free nation then they also have every right to fly any flag they wish however unpopular it is with everyone else.
You can't have it both ways. Your either free or your not.

« shredtone : You can't have it both ways. Your either free or your not. Having flag laws doesn't all the sudden make a country "non free". Most of the Nordic countries are in many ways more free than the States (check the press freedom 2007 rankings for example), yet they have restrictions on many little things like flags.
I'm proud of my homeland, and I moved to Canada legally and I own my own house here. I have the respect for this nation to fly both canadian and the province flag alongside of the finnish flag.

How exactly is this constitutional?
NO ONE in the United States has the authority to tell anyone else how they should or should not express themselves, as long as the person isn't hurting anyone else.
