A United North America would include, like it or not, Mexico. Such a plan would have to wait 10 or 15 years until they all move up here and get citizenship.
Seriously, though, whose joins who?
1. Do they live under our Constitution? Are we expected to adopt theirs? Write a brand new one? (BTW: It is illegal for the government to even consider scrapping the constitution without following the procedure to call a Constitutional Convention. After convening, they can do anything from amend to scrapping our entire government.)
2. Whose money becomes useless?
3. etc.

This has been a conspiracy theory for ages, hightening its circulation when Europe adopted the euro as a united currency.
It's not gonna happen.

One united north america would be a mess, not to mention a political nightmare. Our countries are just too different - sure, they may be similar on the broad scale of things, but the little things that distinguish each society would not allow for any sort of a smooth transition. Americans call Democrats liberal; in Canada, that same Democrat would be considered almost radically conservative. Republicans would likely be chased out of most of Canada (and definitely Quebec) with hockey sticks, and the intimacy of America's church and state wouldn't be good for us either. I'm sure everyone on the south side of the border would think the same thing but opposite.
If anything, I could see certain provinces/territories/states becoming viable sovereign nations; they would have more comparable economies and similar interests.

lol to TundraMonkey.
A casual observer may say that Canada and the US are similar enough to join one another but there are just way too many differences.
I for one would not welcome the US' policies on gun control, or health care. And with the recent US views on accepting their Spanish speaking communities - imagine how our French and Accadian Canadians would be welcomed! or our Native culture.
I for one, as a proud red blooded Canuck, would favour joining our friends across the pond and bring back our Commonwealth status with th UK or join the European nations and adopt the Euro.
And I just couldn't imagine spelling Colour or Labour any other way!

3. Why should we use the US model?
The US model is preferred because it is believed to be considerably better in terms of its representation, and checks and balances.
Pfftt yeah right. Somehow that doesn't ring true now that the "decision maker" is sitting in the throne.

I don't see this ever happening, barring USA goes on the offensive and just takes over. Albeit that seems a lot more likely than we'd have ever thought before, it's still extremely remote.
