 Liberal Media Bias Working Overtime
Liberal Media Bias Working Overtime
With a headline like "Bush Motorcade Kills Cop" you would picture Bush running over some poor cop. The actual story is a motorcycle crashed his bike while riding as part of the motorcade. Must be some ultra-liberal rag right? Well, it was Time Magazine. picked by 2manyusernames 1 year ago

Yeah, this headline makes no sense, "Cop Dies in Bush Motorcade" is way more accurate. It was a one vehicle crash, and the cause of the accident wasn't linked to anyone else in the motorcade.

It's like headlining "Macy's Parade Kills Regis Philbin" after he trips off a float.

Actually, you have no idea what I would picture while reading that headline. What I got out of it is "Sensational story alert! Read further!" And everything's clarified in the very first sentence of the article.

News, both print and broadcast, is riddled with vague teasers. You hadn't noticed?

Want to know what I pictured while reading your headline? "Another Frothing Conservative Sees 'Liberal Media' Conspiracy." Surely I'm reading too much into it.

COP SAYS,BUSH ATE MY ANKLE!!
Well actually no...but a cop did get injured as Pres. Bush run over him, hehe.
For a more sensible headline visit link below.

"The cause of the officer's injury was officially recorded as being "hit by a moving/falling object".

Excellent pic!!

Well, if that's "liberal media bias" they really are falling short of their reputation.

"Mr Bush's usual cycling trails are near his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and near a Secret Service training facility at Beltsville, Maryland."

And never before without the training wheels!

No conspiracy, but of course there is bias in the media, both conservative and liberal.

No, I have no idea what you are thinking. You might be thinking about how hot that newscaster on CNN is looking.

So, instead of imagining what you're thinking, let's just look at the language.

Bush Motorcade Kills Cop

That sentence can only be taken in one way, the English language can be vague at times, but that is very clear cut. The motorcade itself killed the cop.

If someone riding in the motorcade hit a cop than the headline would be accurate (it would still be a bit of a teaser, but it would be factual). The actual truth is far different. The motorcade didn't kill the cop, the cop killed the cop when he lost control over his motorcycle.

Yes, headlines are often done in a teaser way. This is a bit past "teaser" and almost into libel/slander as it makes an untrue accusation when taken as read.

Circus Kills Clown

If there's a cop to be seen near a motorcade, he's quite likely to be in the motorcade.

The headline can be read both ways, and I'd be willing to bet the editor knew it and chose it for that very reason. That's what makes it an interesting headline. It makes me want to read more.

Perhaps though, that is your own bias and assumption. I read the headline the way Galoot did and I was totally prepared for some actual bias, was looking for it, was hoping for it. Didn't find it.

I've seen headlines like that all the time, mostly NOT about Bush or any politician.

"Highway 78 Claims Another Life". So did the highway suddenly veer in the opposite direction of the driver and kill them? But it sure draws your attention.

We are apt to read into things based on our own bias. Perhaps the media (since there are certainly specific periodicals and dailies that make no apology for their bias both conservative and liberal, I mean the media in general) could be accused of playing into that, but I've seen more than enough to know they swing both ways politically if that's the case. Sensationalism knows no bias.
