I wonder why he played such a prolonged postponement game?

Maybe didn't think would do well or might loose his momentum if he got in to early?

I think he really hurt his chances.

He has made himself look weak and as if he just can make a decision. If he had jumped in early, he would have quickly grabbed a lead and would have had all sorts of media coverage.

Now he can think what might have been

Totally disagree 2many. He didn't get in because... he didn't have to. Everyone else go in particularly early, and to what advantage? More criticism from the media, more chances to put their foot in their mouth, and more opportunities to participate in debates that are meaningless, and only serve to further magnify faults and problems.

He may have lost a few points by delaying his entry... but I doubt it will really hurt his chances in the end.

True, you may have a point. Actually both views are equally correct. The thing to see it how will the voters look at it.

He does of course have the namer recognition and the persona of a leader. That will help him tremendously.

Apparently he was reluctant to announce his candidacy as he would have to declare his campaigns funding. Whilst undeclared he still toured and spoke at various rallies and events maintaining his presence in the media, who have been asking the 'will he won't he' question for the last few months whilst not having to firmly commit to any political stance. He enters the race with over a year to go and with a relatively clean scandal free campaign.

Like you say (2manyusers) his personality status makes him instantly identifiable across your whole country.

Just imagine: Whenever the president is announced for a press conference, you will hear some dude ramming 2 chords out of a xylophone.

Most certainly, 2many. Only time will tell.
