First tag, now freaking PB & J is banned at an elementary school
First tag, now freaking PB & J is banned at an elementary school
Some kids there have a nut allergy so ALL of the kids now are asked to not bring any nut related food to school whatsoever. Some teachers were searching lunch boxes and throwing away peanut related foods. Granted it is an airborne allergy, but searching lunchboxes and taking food away? Can't the 2 allergic kindergarteners eat in a separate location? another vote to add an Education category as well. picked by moe 1 year ago

This is outrageous. If I had less self control I'd throw something.

I guess it depends on the extent of the allergic reaction. A Canadian girl died a few years back after kissing her boyfriend--he'd had something with peanut butter earlier in the day.

I think this type of overreaction will get worse as people, schools and businesses are increasingly sued for stupid things.

That's OK as long as you don't throw any nut related objects.

And I think they figured out that the Canadian girl did NOT die from her boyfriend's peanut kiss.

Interesting--I hadn't really tracked it closely.

Of course, I will throw in the obligatory whine that if 'they' can ban something like peanut butter, why can't 'they' force those who soak themselves in perfume/cologne to shower?

What are the kids supposed to eat?

You pack PB&J because unlike Bologna and Cheese with Mayonnaise, Peanut butter doesn't spoil.

Here son, have a bag of styrofoam.

Soon it'll be rice cakes (unsalted of course) and water. Yum...

I have known children who are allergic to things and they have the forethought to stay away from them. What about milk, fruits or other things. Do you ban everything just because a few people are affected? Another way the many are affected by the few. Lets cater to the minority while ignoring the majority.

I think that would be unfair and may lead to the kids being ostracised by the others because they won't understand (can't expect kids that young to understand something like that)

No milk, either; in addition to a ban on peanut butter, my nephew's school now has a ban on dairy products - I guess the Bologna and Cheese sammies are out of the question too! [at least for the gr. 1 and 3's]

Interesting - we hired a smell-sensitive student this summer, and I guess she learned the hard way that it's impossible to make any field camp scent-neutral [no-one wore perfume, but tromping through the bush when it's 30C above makes for smelly humans!].

I've also been curious as to what would happen if we had someone with strong food allergies into a field camp - I think field work would be tough (and everyone's moods would plummet) if we couldn't have any nuts or dairy or any favorite foods. I suppose eventually I'll find out.

I'd like to know what the parents of the kids with the allergies have to say about this.

Life's not fair. They'll have a better understanding of that if they get separated. Heck, they can start they're own club. And rather than ban something, why not EXPLAIN what's going on. It's not ok to ostracize either, maybe we could ban that instead?

Sorry, this is off topic and directed at Kitsune. Plime could use a private message system. Feel free to downvote as you like.

Kitsune86? Craig from Missouri? en-anatomie? ewokswithaks? justmaybetiger? If so, why are you still posing as a girl from Ireland? If so, its real hard to take anything you say seriously.

Gotta luv teh internets.

Plime does have a private message system, it's the envelope at the top of the page beside your name. Use it to tell me what the hell you're talking about, 'cause I'm seriously confused.

Hey! Do you have any idea the rash styrofoam could cause??!

I say bubblewrap the affected kids, and drop the ban. It's the only way they are going to make it to 5th grade. By then, any kids, that find out who caused all peanut butter products to be banned, are going to beat the snot out of them.

My question(getting back on topic) is what if PB&J is the only thing your kid will eat? I guess she/he comes home for lunch. Are they going to reimburse for the gas?

This is discrimination. What about the vegetarian Kids? Peanut butter is one of the few protein rich foods that you can put in a cold lunchbag.
