Student Sent Home For Wearing A T-Shirt Posted: 11 months ago by 2manyusernames
Did it promote drug use? No. Did it condone violence? No.
All it said was: "Gay? Fine By Me" for this crime of tolerance, the student was sent home.

I remember when I was still in school, some kid got suspended for brining a G.I. Joe gun to school. It's ridiculous.

The schools where I live prohibit shirts with any type of message on them. It's a bit over the top, but it eliminates the need for someone to decide what's ok and what's not.

Before we moved to Texas, we lived in Michigan and I went to Catholic School. We had uniforms. Dark blue trousers, light blue shirt, bow tie (yes, a bow tie), black shoes, black belt. After I moved to Texas we were in a public school. No t-shirts, jeans were okay. You could not have any slogans, writing, anything on the shirts. I don't believe that was censorship but more along the lines of maintaining a standard. Regardless of the message, if you wore a shirt with writing on it you were sent home. It wasn't censorship, it was the breaking of the school rule. You can't mis-interpret something that isn't there.

Hmm, I'm not sure I agree with you on this. It doesn't just eliminate the need for someone to decide, it eliminates the need to *think*.
It's not right to ban all messages because some are offensive.
In my opinion, schools should teach children to think things through. To use their heads to solve a problem. And I don't think such a policy sends the opposite message...

Anything that is subject to interpretation by several people, such as multiple school officials and teachers, is bound to be handled inconsistently because everyone has their own opinion of what is acceptable and what is not.

The supreme court has ruled several times that kids in school do NOT have the same rights as someone out on the street. The right to Privacy, the right to free speech, the right to assemble. All these and more are not protected freedoms due to the nature of the institution.
If you wear a 'hitler' T-shirt, you'll be asked to remove it. Why? Hitler was a person. He was a historic figure. But the reason for wearing it is to cause a disruption. And at THAT point the administration is in the right to ask the student to change it.
School is a place of learning and when students are trying to disrupt that learning they won't be welcome. Other students have the right to be in an instution where they Can learn without someone coming to school preaching their views. Whether it's Pro-Gay or Anti-Gay.
I'm sure if a Westboro Baptist wore a T-shirt with THEIR views on whether it's "Fine by them" to be Gay that people would be in an uproar. If you want 'Free speech' for one, you need 'Free speech' for all.
The principal was right. The student should have been sent home. And it's the Student who should apologize.

What Type of Parents let their children wear clothes like that to School anyways? It just invites a situation like this to arise. It boggles my mind to think about the amount of resources and money that gets Pi$$ed away on these silly (downright stupid) issues.
I’m with Smarty1052, Dress code! Generalized dress code works as well, no statements or sayings allowed. Then the school districts could save millions and possibly improve/enhance the learning possibilities’ at the school.
IMHO a GOOD parent would be more interested in their child gaining a good education. You know, “make a good life for themselves and their future family”. Rather than see if they could stir up some sort of silly lawsuit to gain the family a few bucks and national media time. (That media time is really important for a young child’s education)
Stepping down now.

Wait a sec...
are you guys the same folks who were on here applauding the highschool boys who handed out pink shirts to the student body to defend a picked on bretheren?
but because it wasn't a movement...it was one girl who made a statement of tolerance with her shirt that "she invited trouble"?
*quirk*

So....
As I see it all this T-shirt wearing nonsense boils down to the sentiment of "Hey Look at Me!" Would someone get sent home for wearing a shirt that said "Hey Look at Me!"
I'm all for uniforms, I think uniforms are good, marching hammers and all that, but if you are going to let kids wear what they want....who gets to say what is offensive, what is distracting, what is disruptive?

*quirk* I'm making no statement on whether the girl was right or wrong in her choice of dress. A policy of no messages on shirts helps school officials, like the one mentioned in the story, be less stupid. That's a good thing.

Crazy ass school. In my HS unless it was drug related or sex related you could wear it... Even then, if it wasn't vulger or over the top no one really cared, since it certainly didn't disrupt anyones learning.

I agree, how can we know if you were REALLY giving the boys boners unless we see pics of you in the skirt first hand? I for one refuse to be party to convicting you without reviewing the evidence. Feel free to PM me the pics. I'll let everyone else know if the accusation was valid.

« blurmore : Tolerance has no place in public school. Funny, I'd have put a "No" in front of that statement.
Tolerance is sorely needed in public schools - not just of gays, but of all people. Cliques are perhaps the worst aspect of public education, and the earlier kids can learn to respect each other and get along, the better our educational system (and world!) would be.
