Well, according to your link that's not really what he said. Being an atheist myself, I was all ready to make some sort of snarky comment, but I actually think I sort of agree with him.

So you decided that being intentionally misleading was the way to go on this one?

He says that he thinks people who don't believe in God still believe in something bigger than themselves. That's pretty clear that he thinks some people don't believe in God.

Shame on Comedy Central and shame on you, gammerus.

(Oh, and for the record, I am pretty firmly Democrat, so I'm not saying this to be nice to the candidate I like.)

Perhaps it was somewhat misleading but where does he get the information about all athiests?

As an athiest I don't find a need to attribute any special meaning as to why life exsists.

I think the simplest answer is usually close to the mark. I think the simplest answer is that we have no special provenance. We're here just like all the other animals are, no more, no less. We spend our time on this planet and we're gone. No big mystery really.

On the other hand, this opinion about athiests is from a man who believes an angel named Moroni appeared and.....

Well, you know the rest.

"Something bigger than themselves" does have a deity connotation so the headline does fit somewhat. Pick up any newspaper and you are likely to find headlines that are more misleading than this.

You really really shouldn't insult other members and say "shame on you". She posted this correctly, the headline is fine.

Bigger than themselves doesn't connote deity to me - love, hope, family, national pride... these are all things that occurred to me when I thought of things that are bigger than myself. I honestly didn't think of anything godlike - not even things like "nature," "mother earth..."

And "shame on you" is an insult? Not in my book. It's a rebuke, and a fairly mild one at that. I still feel that Comedy Central's headline was misleading, and saying "hey, I just said what they said" is an excuse that doesn't hold water. Neither does "pick up any newspaper and you are likely to find headlines that are more misleading than this." You are 100% correct, but just because someone else does something that's wrong doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

I'm willing to believe good intentions rather than malice on gammerus' part, though, so I take back the "intentionally" part of what I said. Sorry, gammerus.

You see the word Athiest in a comment and you think of family, love, national pride and hope?

I have to admit I don't follow that.

The word Athiest almost certainly indicates a religious discussion of some sort. Romney is most likely speaking about some alternate belief that he would consider the same as a belief in a god.

I'm an atheist. I'm rather average in stature. I've seen things that are bigger than me!

No, I see the phrase "bigger than myself" and think of those things.
