 Clinton wins in Florida
Clinton wins in Florida
With the reputation Florida's gotten around here, I'm not surprised. Good thing it counts for nothing, let's all hope it stays that way. picked by unzercharlie 10 months ago

I'm confused... I understand something about how florida votes don't count because their primary is too early or something, but why hold the election then?
Anyone got a link to an article that explains this a little better? (Or care to explain it themselves?)

The same thing happened in Michigan, all I know is that the only states allowed to hold their primaries or caucuses before February 5 are Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. I don't know why it was early, but that's why it doesn't count.

My guess is that Florida thinks their primary will have have more of an impact by influencing the rest of the states' primaries than they would if they just did it on the 5th with the rest of us.

1. A Florida win is "still" a win, and thus... free media publicity for her (and none for Obama).

2. Knowing she carried the state, she now knows whether she should lobby to have the delegates reinstated (which is quite possible).

3. The meaningless primary is still a bellweather of sorts for the level of support she can expect in the state, should she recieve the Democratic nomination.

4. While she agreed not to campaign in the state, she didn't agree (apparently) to forgo fundraising.

5. Amendment 1 on the ballot reduces property taxes throughout the state. Even the Dems get to vote on that... the only other thing on the ballot was who you want for the DNC nomination. So she got the "I guess I might as well vote since I'm here" nod.
