Lawd help us all. 1 thing is for sure, if Huckabee wins the Republican vote, we'll have a Democrat in office.

Huckabee doesn't have a chance in hell in winning the nomination. He knows that. He is sticking in hoping to get a vice-presidential nomination.

I agree. I don't think I could vote for a ticket with Huckabee on it even as vice-president.

It is disconcerting that he is picking up any states, or getting this much attention.

Can we refrain from calling people we disagree with politically, names? I mean, it's become the norm these past 8 years, but really... can we perhaps become adults again?

And for the record (before it's suggested) I'm no Huckabee fan... I think some of the things he's trying to push are pure fantasy... I'm just asking for a little civility.

Yikes! I had really hoped that nobody would vote for the man!

I am watching the results of today with rapt attention, even though I have to prepare to vote in our own election (get to vote in provincial elections on 3 March).

I'll add a political rant here - if the NDP's are pushing such a green agenda, then WHY the F*** are they the first party to plaster the roads and buildings with glossy ads and signs?!!!!! Hello, Hypocracy!

I'm sorry if my jab was not funny to you, you are obviously much more mature than I am.

I don't really understand the hyper-sensitive approach to politics, if you disagree with me I'm not going to care if you call me a dumbass.

I don't call everyone I disagree with politically names. I can have civil discourse with, say, McCain supporters, or Ron Paul supporters.

Huckabee supporters, however, are idiots.

Well for me, it comes down to two things:

1- Respect. Respect for what they're doing, respect for the office the hold (are hoping to hold), and respect for America, America's government, and America's people who care enough to stand-up for their ideas. That is not to say, necessarily, agreement or approval... but respect nonetheless.

2- Arrogance. Who am I to say someone else is an "idiot," "stupid," or otherwise "dumb" simply because they don't agree with me? Arrogance on the part of people who think there is only one way to think, and everyone else must be morons for disagreeing. That is a level of arrogance and ego, I simply cannot understand.

Disagree with someone... debate the point, and shoot them down. But if you must resort to juvenile name calling, you've already lost the argument.

Huckabee. Wants. To. Create. A. Theocracy.

It doesn't matter if he would ever be able to accomplish it or not. The fact is that he wants to.

Also, respect has to be earned. And it can also be lost. No one and nothing should automatically be granted respect.

I agree. What ever happened to respectfully disagreeing with someone? Not to mention the fact that blanket statements like the one above often implicate people that the person cares about and wouldn't normally disrespect.

Granting respect based only on what someone has done for you lately seems naive to me. There are plenty of people who are respectable members of society and have better things to do than go around proving it to everyone that puts them down.

The fact is we all make mistakes and we all do/say/support stupid things at any time in our life.

I voted for Bush in the last election; does that make me stupid? No. Does that mean I did a stupid thing? Probably. One does not always equal the other.

I didn't say anything about "done for me lately"

Bush has a whole team of people devoted to helping his PR and convincing the public that he is better than he really is. There is no shame in buying into it as long as you realize the mistake later. Huckabee is making no attempt to hide his intentions.

There's a huge difference between respect and civility, something you seem to be failing to grasp.

The problem here is that we can't discuss something like Huckabee or anything else for that matter, without someone coming along and claiming the moral high ground, then s**tting on anyone who doesn't bother to.

In the past eight posts, hypersapien has been the only one to even mention Huckabee, everyone else is worried that hypersapien isn't showing enough compassion, when in reality, the amount of compassion someone shows is not up to you and has nothing to do with the opinion stated.

Example:
"I think that puppy is ugly."

Defense, not disagreement:
"OMG! How could you say that about a poor little puppy!"

Correct (and civil) way to disagree:
"I think that puppy is cute."

I disagree with your puppy analogy. A more apropos analogy would be something like:

Statement:
Huckabee wants to abolish the IRS.

Civil disagreement:
I don't think he'll be able to convince congress to go along with that.

Name calling:
Huckabee is a moron... I can't believe there are people out there who believe his sh*t.

That's the kind of stuff that doesn't advance the discussion, or help anyone. It is the tool of those who can't form a coherent argument for what they believe, so they resort to what we can all do... name calling.
