Some voters say sexism less offensive than racism
Some voters say sexism less offensive than racism
The simple fact that either Hillary Clinton, a white woman, or Barack Obama, a black man, will likely be the Democratic nominee for president is fueling a nationwide debate about how sexism and racism may shape this campaign. picked by dollyllama 7 months ago

At our tea party, voter Mabel Freeman told CNN: "In this country, as awful as sexism has been, people lost their lives for civil rights."

Every few minutes in this country a woman is beaten. I'd venture more women have lost their lives (and that continues daily).

Why does this not spark the same outrage?

Because that is illegal, and women are not a minority... we make up about 50% of the population

I'd actually say it doesn't spark outrage because women don't have a leader to gather 'round. Seriously, whenever something insults the black community, Jesse Jackson steps up and "represents" the collective opinion. The closest to that is Gloria Steinem, and feminism isn't widely accepted in America.

Not that it's good, either way.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. No one outraged because it's illegal and we're not a minority? Therefore it's ok? I'm not sure I get it.

It truly saddens me that as far as we have come, some are still hung up on gender or race. That this is still a topic makes me nauseous.

It also enrages me that sexism is so widely accepted while racism is widely frowned upon.

Imagine the field day the media would have if there was a sign held up for Obama that said "Pick me some cotton." Yet, "Iron my shirt", which should have been as equally offensive, was laughed off as guys just makin' fun.

And for the record, if your statistics are correct, gammerus, and we DO make up 50% of the population, we are still viewed as less than. The earlier posted idea that we have no one to stand up for us like Jesse Jackson in female form is likely because anytime we do have the audacity to stand up for ourselves we are whining or on the rag that day. A man states his opinion and he merely has an opinion, women state their opinions and they are moody or b***hy.

I truly long for the day where nothing is taken into consideration about a person except for the actions they portray.

I am not holding my breath. There are too many "good 'ol boys" out there still breeding the ignorance that women and people of color are less than and are not to be treated equally.

I am white and I lived in a predominantly black area for about 3 years. I have experienced first hand what racism feels like and I am here to tell you it is not a good feeling. I can't say that I have had to deal with it my entire life so I don't pretend to have a complete understanding of the depths it can reach in a person. I do know that it is never something I would like to experience again.

At any rate, I would really like to know why sexism isn't held at the same level as racism.

The civil rights movement was much more recent, and there was real violence and hatred surrounding the movement. Women’s suffrage on the other hand was a good long time ago and didn't have as much prejudice encompassing it.

More over the biggest reason the sexism is tolerated whereas racism isn't is because we know we are built physically and mentally different so people have some psuedo-science to back up their ridiculous claims.

See this is the problem, we never should have told men about periods.

Ok, I understand what you're saying. But I will disagree that women's suffrage didn't (doesn't) have prejudice encompassing it. That is exactly the problem. No one sees it as prejudice, as bias. It clearly is.

Yes there is bias and prejudice, but I don't really think of it on the same level so I guess it just doesn't bother me as much.

Why is this presidential race focusing so much about race and color? At least with George W the country had the decency to make fun of him for something about his personality (specifically his stupidity). I don't know anything about Obama other than he's a democratic black guy. Yeah.. Black Guy '08..

You don't have to be a minority to be minor.

I understand that. I went to an Indian school for three semesters where I was the white kid. People made comments when I walked by, I was constantly harassed for being white, and it was one of the major factors that led me to leave that school. I even had teachers negatively comment on my skin tone. It sucked. I'm glad I don't have to experience that daily in the real world, but man, being the white kid at that school sucked.

On a side note.. My mom grew up surrounded by Amish people and never saw a black person until she went away to college. She tries so hard, too hard, to show that she's accepting and that she can have black friends too. She was in a play about civil rights, she sings in a Martin Luther King choir, and she has little black angle figurines. Still, when she tells a story, she says things like "I saw this boy, well, a little black boy, and.." which is the spot where I say something like "Black? Wait, what's black again? Is that like what James is?" and then my dad and I laugh at her because it's just so funny. The other night I told her that her little angle figurines look funny and my mom looked at me like I was the devil and I said "What? They don't have any faces. They're just these creepy little faceless angle figurines keeling to pray". .. I love pushing her buttons =D
