The Dalai Lama did not threaten to resign... Posted: 8 months ago by Pocksucket
...At least not as reported.

The Dalai Lama has widely been misreported as having threatened to resign as leader of the Tibetan Buddhists (as brought to our attention by Marli, here).

This clarification on his websites seeks to make the distinction that he doesn't intend, even if he could, to step down as Dalai Lama, but as spokesperson for the Tibetans.

Curiously whilst I could find lots of articles on the original story there were none apparent relating to the clarification.

That said, the coverage has drawn more attention to the state of affairs in Tibet, something that China would prefer to avoid, and so meets his original aim in making the statement in the first place.

The media definitely isn't fond of admitting mistakes, are they?

Certainly not - this was partly the reason why I posted this as a separate story rather than as comment - I didn't want it to appear as a contradiction to your posting as you called it exactly as The Times wrote it.

Well... that seems to be straight from the Dalai Lama. I trust that more than a news article.
