But she is a typical white person who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, there's a reaction that's been bred into our experiences that don't go away, and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that's just the nature of race in our society.
My problem with it, is that what he was talking about is a human condition. People are born with an innate "distrust" of outsiders. The level and severity of distrust varies person by person. It's not a white thing, nor is it a black thing. It's simply something that has existed for years as a way for humans (and other animals) to survive in a tough world. look at any alien movie, nobody really goes rushing to make friends with the aliens and that is because people are wary of people not belonging to their in-group.

If you complain about him saying "typical white person" you are a racist.
If you use the phrase "typical black person" you are a racist.
The phrase would have made more sense and been more accurate if he said typical person.

I'm pretty sure that black people aren't afraid of other black people who pass them on the street.

delete "white" and you'd still have the same idea.

He may have meant "human condition" but he didn't say so. He said "typical WHITE person" not "typical person"
I assume nothing racist was meant, but you know damn well that if it was reversed there would be hell to pay.

I don't find how that is racist. Many people are racist and are afraid of of other races this day in age. To many people that may be a typical thing.

Just uninformed. Obama better know that this is something normal and not a product of any one cultural group.

I'm pretty sure that black people aren't afraid of other black people who pass them on the street. Totally disagree. Have you never seen the stories of black kids getting bullied in school because they, "act white"? I've seen a number of articles on black kids who say they've been bullied and threatened because they study and are good students.
Try reversing it. Are white people less concerned when they see other white people on the street? Certainly not.
It’s all about attitude, not race. If you see someone who looks threatening, you’re going to be a little wary of that person. Conversely, if you see someone in a business suit, you’re going to be less concerned. It’s not race, it’s attitude.

This is exactly what Obama was getting at in his speech the other day about his pastor.
People focusing on the political correctness of what was said and claiming to do it in the name of good, instead of focusing on the actual issue of what was being said. People politicise the words and then move on to the next thing, feeling good about themselves without changing anything.
I believe Obama's trying to shine light on some of the real roots of race issues. It's not pretty at times and it'll hurt, but I think he's actually trying to do more than the people who are making waves about his words.

I posted this so people could see how it's an outrage that it was taken in a racist way. Go Obama!
Ps. I hate Bush.

« dreamering : oh, for heaven's sake, leave the guy alone. he's just human. are you going to examine every word a candidate says? why did you vote for bush? Yeah, it's only fair when the media do this to George Bush, his administration, or anyone who puts an "R" next to their name.
They're the ones who should be attacked, scrutinized, made to apologize, and then kicked out of whatever they're doing.
But not Barack! Yeah, he's a presidential candidate, and probably should be more careful with his words... but come on! He's 'one of us' *wink*wink* Let's just cut him a break, and find a popular Republican to attack. That's better.
/sarcasm
Um... why is it that he deserves special treatment (or at least different than we'd give someone else in the same position), again?
