Flag in famous Iwo Jima photo replaced with tree. Veterans say it trivializes what they went through.

They should feel honored, not trivialized. A tree gives us more life and freedom than any flag ever could.

Hmmm, wonder how many of those veterans were actually on Iwo Jima.
The photo of the flag raising is actually a re-inactment of the actual event. The GI's that raised the first flag did it with a smaller flag and with no drama. They captured the Mount and raised a flag as victors.
Understandably, the press and the military wanted something much more pithy. This was the last invasion before assaulting the main island of Japan. We needed all the Gung Ho we could muster, that coming invasion was estimated to cause the worst losses in US history.
The popular image of this flag raising actually is a symbol of the string of hard fought victories in all the Pacific islands and has become an icon indicating victory. Sorry that these vets see it in a much narrower focus.

I missed this original post.
As a Marine Veteran, I can say that this pisses me off.
It trivializes everything that happened on Iwo Jima.
Time Magazine should be ashamed....but they probably aren't...as controversial covers are important to them.
