McCain opposes equal pay bill in Senate
McCain stated his opposition to the bill as he campaigned in rural eastern Kentucky, where poverty is worse among women than men. The Arizona senator said he was familiar with the disparity but that there are better ways to help women find better paying jobs.

"They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," McCain said. "And it's hard for them to leave their families when they don't have somebody to take care of them. picked by MeMe 6 months ago

I understand that he doesn't want to open the floor to tons of lawsuits, but maybe they're warranted and if they are, then let the good times roll.

Well, do note that the bill sought to extend the time allowed to sue an employer over gender discrimination... not to limit or prevent equality or lawsuits.

I would be interested to know the current statute of limitations, versus the proposed one.

Oh, I know... my comment wasn't directed at you. When I read the headline, and the first few paragraphs in the article, it struck me as "McCain against equal pay." And certainly that's the way his adversaries will try to portray it. But that's not really true... it just makes for a good sound bite.

I was just trying to point out the chewy nougat center of his disagreement, before anyone else reading it got the wrong impression.

The existing statute of limitations, requires that the pay inequity complaint has to be filed within 6 months of the receipt of the FIRST paycheck received.

Since it is not common knowledge what your fellow workers are being paid that timeline is a bit short. The new proposal would have changed the statute to 6 months from the LAST paycheck.

The woman who brought the suit hadn't learned of the male/female pay differential for many years.

McCain felt that the pay differential can be cured by more "education and training" in women workers.
