I'm betting most of them showed up for the free Decemberists show at the beginning.

I kind of wish I'd gone, but taking 3 youngish kids there, and trying not to lose them when they inevitably got bored, would have been way too much for my nerves.

Interesting none of the reports mention there was a free concert that also acted as a draw. Not just a band, but a successful local band. That puts the numbers in a completely different picture.
