Hacking Democracy Posted: 6 months ago by TraumaMamma
Electronic voting machines count about 87% of the votes cast in America today. But are they reliable? Are they safe from tampering? From a current congressional hearing to persistent media reports that suggest misuse of data and even outright fraud, concerns over the integrity of electronic voting are growing by the day. And if the voting process is not secure, neither is America's democracy. The timely, cautionary documentary HACKING DEMOCRACY exposes gaping holes in the security of America's electronic voting system.

Excellent video. I downloaded each segment from YouTube with Tubesock & spliced with VisualHub several months ago, made dvd's and handed them out at work. They were met with mixed emotions. We do not like finding these things out.

This is why I am still very skeptical about the elections.

People only get concerned about these things when their guy doesn't win.

Remember the '06 election. There were a lot of these stories before the election took place... but afterwards, and the Democrats took more seats than initially thought, all those news stories seemed to fade away.

While I don't doubt tampering... because, well, everything get's messed with at some point... I doubt it has the widespread effect that some claim it does.

I also believe that things like this are offered up, especially if a specific candidate looses an election, as a means to keep the base energized. If the base thinks the rest of America-State-City-Town-etc. don't agree with them, it can be disheartening. Claiming fraud is a great way to keep up involvement, and pass the buck from "it was our guy" to "they cheated."

One of the most frightening parts of the video is the segment where Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc.(voting machines) promised to deliver Ohio to Bush.

Article from 2003 below. BTW, people were concerned about this before the election. You had the CEO of a voting machine manufacturing company actively campaigning for Bush and sending invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.

Florida is in the process of changing all their machines to ones that have a paper trail. This will be done in time for the Presidential election.

Hey, if Florida can do it....

That isn't true at all. I wanted Bush to win, I didn't want Gore. However, any recounts were quickly squelched and I don't believe our votes are true anymore.

And as Sienna said, Diebold ain't exactly "non partial" to who wins.

And they are not just "claiming" it, darlin'. They actually proved it in a mock election.

It is far easier to shift thoughts of being angry that a party didn't win, than to believe that there is actually alot of deception behind the scenes.

Well, I agree there is deception... but it's been going on long before this. Stories of voter suppression, dead people voting, etc. have been around for years! Electronic voting is just the next logical step. A flawed system, to be sure... but no more flawed than anything else.

As for the 2000 election, every study (independent or otherwise) that has done a recount of the votes comes to the same conclusion... Bush won.

But remember in 2006, there were lots of talk BEFORE the election, about what was going to happen. Then, the results turned out different than originally expected... and those claims faded away. True as fraud or whatever might be, many of the claims are brought up as an election tool... not necessarily for noble causes.

In my opinion the only reason that Florida scrubbed the "Felon List" was because they knew they had the voting machines on their side.
