Should the Media be Concerned with Telling us What’s Right? Posted: 3 months ago by pvisi111
Ron Fournier: "Just because a public official says it doesn't mean you need to put it in your story or give his claim equal billing to what you know to be true. We have an obligation to write factual and fair stories, but we are not obliged to print attack."

Excelent article, and we do need more accountability from our media... but this just seems like common sense...

Speaking from my educational background (degree in journalism), the media really does try to say what's right...but not in this way. This way puts you on a slippery slope on making gut calls about subjects (particularly politics) that aren't necessarily open-and-shut.

The way I was taught, we still go for the heart of the truth, but let the facts speak for themselves. I.E. One whack-job scientist says Global warming is bunk; follow that with quotes from 4 prestigious scientists pointing out why whack-job is wrong.

I don't do my job to think for people. I do my job so people can learn about their world.

Then you are most definately the exception... the problem comes when people allow their personal beliefs cloud their writing or journalism...
instead of Dan Rather, we end up with Limbaugh or Oberman. People are so wrapped up in self, they cannot be subjective or effectively seperate their work from their personal beliefs.

That's because a) they're on TV and b) they host talk shows. The very root of talk shows is entertainment, not information. I, on the other hand, work in the print side of the biz. It may not be the cash cow that television is (or was, they're slipping now, too; yay Internet) but the hundreds of thousands of print journalists make an effort to refrain from judgement. (And this is what the article is about, in that it is about the AP).

The title actually makes it sound more like the question is if the media should be defining our morals. Which I do not think they should be responsible for. And as far as relaying accurate information, I take all news with a grain of salt... because I like salt and salty foods.
