Scientists Find A Fingerprint Of Evolution Across The Human Genome Posted: 2 years ago by Blankspace73
The Human Genome Project revealed that only a small fraction of the 3 billion “letter” DNA code actually instructs cells to manufacture proteins, the workhorses of most life processes. This has raised the question of what the remaining part of the human genome does. How much of the rest performs other biological functions, and how much is merely residue of prior genetic events?
Evolution FTW.

Kangaroo Genome Map Shows Similarities With Humans Posted: 1 year ago by pocksucket
Australian scientists have produced a map of the kangaroo genome to gain a better understanding of how mammalian DNA is ordered. Part of the research shows 20,000 genes in common with humans, inherited from a common ancestor.

Human Genome - World's Greatest Battlefield Posted: 1 year ago by 2manyusernames
8 percent of the human genome is made up of viruses that once attacked our ancestors. The viruses lost. What remains are the molecular equivalents of mounted trophies, DNA fossils. These helped mold our immune system, a system that is truly remarkable evolutionary speaking.

Human Genome Project Phase 2 Posted: 2 years ago by Pocksucket
The original Human Genome Project mapped the DNA from one person and took 13 years to complete. Today the 1000 Genome Project was announced - a plan to map the differences between individual humans that will give an insight into the physiological differences between us, and genetic diseases too. It is expected to take 3 years.

Evolutionary comparison finds new human genes Posted: 2 years ago by AutumnLotus
Using supercomputers to compare portions of the human genome with those of other mammals, researchers at Cornell have discovered some 300 previously unidentified human genes, and found extensions of several hundred genes already known. The discovery is based on the idea that as organisms evolve, sections of genetic code that do something useful for the organism change in different ways.

Structure of HIV genome 'decoded' Posted: 4 months ago by AutumnLotus
Scientists say they have decoded the entire genetic content of the HIV-1 virus, a key source of AIDS infection.
They hope this will pave the way to a greater understanding of how the virus operates, and potentially accelerate the development of drug treatments.
