I live in Phoenix, too (well, I am among the Snottsdalians). But I used to work around 7th and Camelback and I would see drivers doing stupid crap all the time around there. I can now say, after a few years here, that without a doubt (and after having lived in 5 states and TONS of cities including LA, San Diego, Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco and here) that Phoenix has the WORST drivers in the country and that the people here are the biggest a**holes I've ever met.

Everyone is angry here and they try to take it out on everyone else. We live in the frickin' desert, people are bound to be pissed about that.

But you don't have a car?! WTF do you do during the summer?!?!

That would acutally be my perfect girl. green vomit and all. :-) But yea some guys suck, I was stumbling around this house once at this party and I kinda walked into this room that I thought was a closet(don't ask why I was lookin for a closet) but I walked in on this guy that was holding this girl down and she was screaming.. and I think thats the first time I've ever intentionally wasted alcohol b/c I hit him with the beer bottle like 3 times b4 it broke then started punchin him, but then his friends came and drug me out and kicked my ass, lol.. I was kinda drunk but hey she got away.. I think she started dating him like a week later though even though she thanked me for saving her that night.. so yea .. sometimes I hate girls as well

That'd work... thing is, most places don't let you carry throwing knives. No fun, I say... Not even office buildings or sports fields. Carrying unconcealed weaponry does cause people to back off, but then it also attracts attention you wouldn't really want (the fuzz, for example).

Your idea won't work because if these men are that intent on getting to know her, its like a boss of mine when I was a teen told me, "Wag, a ring doesn't plug a hole." If these guys are that hard after her then a wedding ring won't ward them off.

Whatever you do, be confident. Even if you're terrified. Predators are most likely to pick a victim that looks weak. If you are cornered, get your cell and dial 9-1-1 while saying it out loud, they'll usually book it.

Some men are creeps. Help teach them what is and is not acceptable behavior, even if you need a can of mace to do it.

It's happened to me, it happens everywhere, everywhere there are jerks that is.

I was once wandering around the streets of Weisbaden, Germany. It was quite late at night. I don't speak German.

A car pulled up next to me, a man got out and started speaking in German. I said "Sorry, I don't speak German". He then began to approach me gesturing towards his car.

I got nervous and banged on the hood of his car, he stopped briefly and then started to approach me again, still speaking in German and gesturing, a bit more frantically.

I then started kicking his car, hard. Very hard (I was a runner so I have very strong legs). I could see the dents I was putting in his car and he tried gesturing for me to stop but I kept kicking and started screaming "get away from me, get the f**k away from me", like a mad woman. He jumped back in his car and took off.

For all I know he wanted to know where to get petrol but I wasn't about to wait and find out.

So yeah, the mad woman thing works.

That's scary! I bike in the mornings, when there isn't much traffic, so I've never had any problems. Since you do have a description of the car, I would report it to the cops, and ask if they can provide more patrols through that area.

My parents own a bike shop. And while I am now kinda fat and fairly sedentary I used to be a pretty good urban cyclist. My stepfather is unbelievable, but he is also 8 parts crazy and kinda fearless. He recommends a U-lock....or thick chain across the hood/to the mirrors/in the tail lights in addition to CS/OS or a Tazer. If you can't already...learn to parallel bunny hop, a primary skill of an urban rider. Practice at a school or some other area with a long curb.

Ehow article with good explanation. This can get you out of a situation where you might be stuck without a handicapped ramp. If you are getting tagged in ruralish areas where there are not curbs I don't really have any suggestions, except to make yourself and your bike as "frumpy" and "saftey" as possible scotchlight tape everything and get a flag, if your bike looks like it is being ridden by their grandma they probably won't mess with ya. Its your life at stake, and the more serious you are about making them pay for endangering it the less likely they will be to mess with someone else. Don't worry about damaging their vehicle, but be prepared to get to a populated area or store if they chase you, call the cops first, have them explain why you had to "get their attention" in the first place.

This reminds me of when I first moved to a city and went out rollerblading (had to buy them - the marvel! You can't use them on gravel, so I'd been looking forward to that for a year... anyway) in a white t-shirt on a nice sept afternoon.

Then a carload of stupid boys drove by ..... it was a drive-by waterballooning.

That story told - I've never felt in danger of being hit by a car. I think it's maybe your area, or at least that sort of thing doesn't seem to be common where I live.

I would have to say that it's reasonable to hate men. For the most part, men are jerks. There are few exceptions to the rule. I like to think that Plime is the exception.

No not all guys... just the ones that make we want to commit homicide. I live in phoenix and I don't live in the best neighborhood, but I think it shouldn't be expecting to much to be able to travel alone without having to watch all the cars/trucks to make sure they are minding their own business.

Seriously, it is really starting to bug me. I stopped walking alone after the 5th time I was confronted/cornered by a car, then tonight a damn truck tries to do the same thing while I was bicycling. This is really starting to irk me, and I am beginning to wonder if this is my area, or if it is pretty common in most suburbs.

I don't drive a car (nor do I want to) but I am beginning to think that I will have to in order to travel alone without dealing with these people.

(Yes I understand this is pretty funny considering my avatar, but in real life I generally dress pretty conservatively)
