Group files suit over 'I Believe' plates in South Carolina
A group that advocates separation of church and state filed a federal lawsuit Thursday to prevent South Carolina from becoming the first state to create "I Believe" license plates. The group contends that South Carolina's government is endorsing Christianity by allowing the plates, which would include a cross superimposed on a stained glass window. picked by TedGoas 3 months ago

As long as they also make "I believe" license plates with a picture of Mulder with a UFO, I have no problem with this.

Seriously, though, the only way this would be acceptable would be if they made available license plates endorsing every religion on the planet. It's all or nothing, baby.

There would be nothing wrong with this, nor would it be endorsing a particular religion if a church paid the $4000 or had 400 prepaid orders just as any other special interest group can do.

Just as any other religion can do for that matter.

If the state did it without using their own criteria than it is obviously illegal.

Simple fix, have a church pay the fee.

As a secular humanist, I say that the plates shouldn't be the standard plate, but if one were to elect to have the plate for a larger fee, I don't see any reason why the plate should not be allowed to go into production. Indiana has a plate that says In God We Trust, but I believe that those are alternate plates, not the standard regular fee plates.

I live in SC and can confirm that the I Believe' plates are not the general issue plates. They are one of many special intrest plates that range from 'Wildlife Conservation' to 'Share the Road with a Cyclist' to 'State College of Choice'.
