I've noticed a sudden appearance of horsey types on Plime and I've also noticed horsey talk being introduced into unrelated threads.

My wife and daughter are BIG horsey people (into horses, not some kind of weird horse/human hybrids) and virtually all I hear at home is horse talk from them.

So as my wife is a Plurker and I noticed Dexhol and Horsefeathers are horse lovers (so to speak), I though this might drag the missus out of the shadows and give me a rest from horsey chat! >;)

Mobase doesn't do "horsey" talk either. He kinda get that eyes glazed over look when I talk horse lingo.

I have the same glazed look in my eyes when she starts talking horses too. I'll tell her about this thread when she gets back from her yard :D

Oooh, a horsey thread!

Okay, I used to showjump a lot, and my family has always had horses. We had 9 at one stage, but we were a bit mad I think. We were breeding show ponies and race horses, as well as having a pony for me and my brother, and 2 showjumpers for my mother.
Now we just have one pony, one horse. Pony is Rocky, he's fantastic. Loves to jump, and would carry around any one. You need to be a good rider to have some control over him though. But point him at a jump, and he's off. He won all round him with me in Pony classes, and when my mum registered him as a horse for a year, she won some major horse comps with him. Not bad for a 14h cob!
The Horse is Thing. So called cos he's a lump. He's a TB Irish Draught cross, so he has a little bit of the largeness to him. Over 17h, and hooves the size of dinner plates. But gentle, and a real pet. Loves a bit of a scratch. Problem is, he could turn his head and he'd send you flying. Or he could stand on your foot and no amount of screaming or thumping him on the shoulder in a blind panic will make him realise what he's doing.
Great showjumper too. None of the taspyness that Rocky has. And he takes his time, but because of his large stride he covers the ground. Tight corners are his downfall. But he still does well in timed competitions, very quick for his size.
I don't ride any more, and my mum only hacks now. The two we have are getting on in age, so they're living out their retirement at home. Nice to have them near, they're part of the family.

We don't have a lot of jumpers around here, more eventers/dressage/hunters/western games/etc. I'm sure the jumpers across the pond are different. Do they do them at rated hunter shows or seperately? My trakehner mare tends to spend too much time in the air to compete real well at the jumpers, hence the eventing where the time is not such an issue. Had an Arab pony sized mare as a kid that was WILD, did super well in the jumpers, though the hunters (where I had to spend a lot of time, due to the lack of jumpers and events in the area at the time) used to laught their *sses off at me!

I think I've seen pics of your guys in the pets forum, Thing is HUGE. I love big horses. My trak. is 16.1, TB 16.3, but I'd love a taller one!


I travel around the area taking care of everyone else's horses, only have 2 of my own, but can wind up taking care of upwards of 60 a day between the barns around here.

You ever miss riding and just get the urge to go for a good gallop?

I don't have a horse, and I have never had one. I have ridden one--in the backwoods of Mexico on my honeymoon. We crossed a big(the biggest I had yet seen) river on those horses. It was fun. I really liked it when we would ride fast. It was an all day ride. We even stopped for lunch. My butt was soooo sore. I would do it again if given the chance. Tell your wife to join us.

I love showjumping. Boomer was way more suited for showjumping and I did alittle bit with him but did mostly hunters and equitation. He did well in the hunter over fences classes but it was hit or miss with the under saddle flat classes. If he was calm (or dead tired after 4 hours of wearing him out to do the hunters), he would win his flat classes. As a teenager and in college, I did alittle bit of everything, combined training, dressage and was on the Equestrian team in College which was all hunter equitation on strange horses. We traveled to the hosting college who supplied the horses and for our classes (one over fences, one on the flat) we drew a horses name out of hat, mounted and went right in the ring. The only thing you could do was adjust your stirrups, no warm ups.

I ofter wonder when Boomer is gone and I don't get another horse, if I will miss it. It's been part of my life for my entire existence.

You guys catch the Derby? Anyone know what exactly happened to the filly that died at the end of the race? I've stopped watching it live, what with all the injuries of late. Last time we watched the races at Penn a filly fell and was put down in the first race, so we left...

I'm not sure of the differences either. We have eventing, though we only ever showjumped really. The jump competitions are sorted by jump height in the horse classes. 1 Metre, 110, 120. They used to be sorted by grade, E to A. But you could have a new rider on an A horse, and they would have no chance in the A competitions. Only option would be to downgrade the horse, which was a shame. It's either a straight, get a double clear round, or all the clear rounds will go into a jump off, which is a timed round. Hunting has been banned, though Personally I never hunted that way anyway. But there still are drag hunts and "Funrides" which are just a set course across the country side over natural obstacles.

You must be up at the crack of dawn to be caring for all those! I'm tired just thinking about it.

REALLY miss riding. I go home for holidays and things, but I have a load of health problems now so can't do much on the horses. Still feel the urge though. Especially if I sit up on Rocky and you can feel him gagging to go under you.

Horsefeather: I only did the tiniest bit of showing for fun, a little with Rocky (who quickly proved he wasn't suited!) and also with a Connemara mare and two of her foals. We have the same sort of thing over here, but I hadn't heard them called Hunters and Equitation. But I'm not hugely familiar with that side anyway.

You would deffo miss having a horse. It's hard to go from being so fit too to losing it all! But really, I think if you're into horses, that's it. You'll be stuck in them forever

Ok, my hubbie is doggy and he's been driving me potty to come on here, so here I am! He just mumbles "horses, horses, horses" whenever I start talking to him...so now I don't need to anymore...I'll just bore you guys with it now!
