« horsefeathers : That's difficult to manage since he has laminitis. If they leave the barn open and well ventilated that will help. Nothing irritates me more, than when they close the barn up when it's 40-50 degrees outside. Horses don't necessarily get "cold". They need air flow, ventilation and fresh air! Where I board now, the owner does that, closes it all up when it's just too warm out. If you see moisture accumulating on the inside barn walls, the horses are actually breathing that moisture into their lungs. Breeding ground for respiratory illnesses. Horses respiratory systems weren't meant to handle being cooped up in a barn. When I worked at the breeding farm, they had a stallion that suffered from heaves, so he was not bedded down on straw or sawdust, they used shredded newspaper because it was basically dust free.
Amen sister. I live in Ohio and as soon as it was nice, like April, my horses were outside all the time till fall. (unless we had a major storm and they had to come in). We had a pasture where they could play in, with not much grass and a bigger one that hooked into it that we could turn out to eat grass.

My horses HATED to be inside. And people thought we were abusive by keeping them out in rain, snow or whatever. (I am talking light stuff, mind you).

We had a pony that lived to be 47 yrs old so we musta done something right!

I'm really curious to see how my dog would react to a horse. She's naturally friendly and tries to wrestle with / jump on other animals. I know her paws wouldn't reach up high enough to jump up on a horse, so what then? hehe

This is a pic of me and my first pony- Frisky aka piss and vinegar. Circa 1976. At this point I had her 2 years and was already out growing her. :( I kept her until I was a freshman in college and then she went on to carry alittle girl through 4-H.

Did you guys see they had to put Theodore O'Connor (Teddy) (Karen O'Connor's Rolex and should have been Olympic partner) down today? Guess he got loose while they were untacking, took off and lacerated his leg somehow. Sucks to hear. Now THAT was an AMAZING pony!!
