I have systemic lupus that has been in remission for 10 years or so. I'm pretty sure that prevents me from donating certain things, but I'm listed as an organ donor anyway.
I had a bunch of friends who bought into the whole "if you're an organ donor, doctors won't try as hard to save you" horses**t and tried to talk me out of it.

i still need to get a doner card. as like most people have said on this topic, why let things go to waste when they can save someones life, which is an amazing thing! but again, i dont think id wanna do the eye thing, but anything else go for it really! would any of you do this though?
«Pocksucket : Odd coincidence, it was on the news today that in the UK it's most likely that the situation will reverse - that unless you specifically opt out, your organs will be considered fair game.
Which to my mind is the way it should be.
I think this is the best idea ever. If you don't wish to donate, then opt out. It will save so many lives. I think a lot of people just don't think to sign up, when they would be perfectly happy to donate, so this would help with that.
«icepigs : I'll donate my organ to any cute girl who wants it!!
(Ok admit it - we're all surprised this thread went this long without someone saying that.)
Anyway, I don't think I'm a donor - not because of any selfish reason, I just don't think they put it on the license here in Texas. I know I've never been asked.
If I were asked, I would say "yes" - but like craziesean, I don't think my liver would be too desirable. (and because of my family history, my heart may not be much of a catch, either)
May I simply indicate my desire to be an organ/tissue donor on my Texas driver’s license? That is not adequate under Texas law. A signed and properly witnessed donor card, document, or will is essential to ensure that your desire to become an organ/tissue donor is honored. (From TexasBar.com)
I'm the same, Icepigs. They never ask when you renew you dl, so I guess I'm not. Apparently, you only need to print out a donor card and have two witnesses sign it.
I'll see what I can find out about the legality of this, but here's the link.
