Sleep disorders often mistaken for ADHD
Sleep disorders often mistaken for ADHD
"Many of the kids with a sleep disorder will present with inattention. They'll have fatigue. They may even look like a child who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but in fact, it's related to their sleep," said Thomas Burns, a neuropsychologist. picked by muppet 4 months ago

I love this article! So many people look to ADD/ADHD as a catch all - default group for their kids when they aren't doing well. I love that this encourages parents to really delve deeper and get more involved with what the root of the problem is.

why not, since a kid just being a kid is often mistaken for adhd.

The fact that there is a ton of money in it for the doctors, drug companies (heck even the parents can get social security benefits) surely doesn't have anything to do with it.

I think that is really interesting. I have one daughter who is non stop all the time going on and on. My other daughter is sooo laid back. Almost too much so. She loses focus very easy. Does she ADD/ADHD who knows? Is she just a kid and some kids are just that way? I don't know that either. I work with her everyday, the school works with her. it is important to explore all options before considering treatment--if any is even needed. Another child with fatigue and not being able to focus might simply need a better a bedtime. I am glad these parents and the doctor were able to figure out what the real problem was.

hmmmm....maybe I do actually have a sleep disorder. Getting to sleep is often quite a problem. ADD just seems to be a nice easy label to slap on a person for a doctor.
